Today is Universal Children's Day - a day to recognize that to invest in our future means investing in our children. Education is an important part of unleashing a child's potential. In 2012, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of the United Nations led the initiative for every child to be able to attend school by the year 2015. We Remember Private Robert Bob Evans Bob arrived in Canada from England in1902 at 11 years old as an orphan Home Child with Barnardo Homes and eventually to live on the farm of Sidney Parker until 1912. He enlisted out west in 1915 and died just over a year later, having served in the trenches in Belgium and France. On Sept. 26, 1916, he took part in the latter part of the Somme offensive with the task of cleaning and consolidating sections of the front line near Thiepv...al, France. When his letters to his sister and Sid Parker stopped, they both wrote to military authorities. What a trial it must have been for them, as he was first reported missing, and later presumed dead. He is remembered on the Vimy memorial in France, commemorated on the Walkerton Cenotaph and his presumed death was reported in the Walkerton Herald and Times. http://bruceremembers.org/soldier/808/ #WeRemember #Remembrance2020 #BruceCountyHistory #BruceCountySoldiers Walkerton Legion Branch 102 Municipality of Brockton

Fire safety never goes out of style. This week is Fire Prevention week which is on record as the longest running public health observance, according to the National Archives and Records Administration's Library Information Centre. "Serve up Fire Safety in the Kitchen" is the 2020 theme. Did you know that unattended cooking is the #1 cause of fires in Ontario? This photograph features a 1929 Bicknell fire truck in Southampton. We Remember Private Harvey G. Greig Harvey Greig, of Eastnor Township, enlisted for service with the 160th Battalion in December 1915. The Wiarton Echo Aug. 22, 1917 headline Harvey Greig Does Brave Deed cites his distinguished conduct as a bombing instructor. [He] had a class out firing rifle grenades when one of the bombs struck the parapet and rolled back into the bay. There were seven men in the bay and they all stood waiting to be blown to kingdom come, except Serg...t. Greig, who sprang forward, seized the bomb and threw it over. It had scarcely left his hand when it exploded, but it was over the parapet far enough to save the lives of all who were in the bay.
