Bruce Sanctuary 16.03.2021

We have had a very long hard week here at Bruce Sanctuary. Started with Amber our 21 year old Appaloosa pony who’s 10 months pregnant got hurt somehow , leaving multiple huge gashes on her back and side. Being so close to labour we had to vet come in to check her . Than we rescued 12 hens that had very bad scaly leg mites . So that was an other vet visit with very expensive medicine to treat them . We also had to re order Harvey’s medicine for her PPID which is now doubled th...e prescriptions So will only last half the time . Than last night Logan our gentle giant started limping so the vet is on his way for the third time this week and very much hoping we do not need X-rays or to ship him anywhere for care . We also have the Ferrier coming today to do 6 horses feet . So if you are looking for a fun activity to do with your kids please come visit us !! We have lots to see ! Visits are free but donations are appreciated. If you got extra cash you can help us with please send it to [email protected] thank you ISME See more

(One introduction each day leading up to the event. ) Meet Wayne Wayne was rescued with his girlfriend, an inbred doe. They were inseparable! He was very pro...tective of her and always at her side. Sadly, a few days after arriving at the sanctuary she passed away. Wayne’s demeanour changed noticeably. It was clear that he was devastated over the loss of his beloved. Billy, another goat at the sanctuary, began to befriend Wayne after his loss. Uncertain the two would get along, Isabelle and Tyler were pleasantly surprised! These two have become best buddies and follow each other everywhere. Like all best buddies, their relationship does get tested and they do fight! In typical bromance style, they butt heads, ram each other, and in no time, are back on track like nothing happened! These companions usually roam freely on the grounds except when visitors are present. Like all the other animals, they love to get attention and receive cuddles. The problem is, that when visitors turn their attention away from them, they will express their desire for more cuddles by ramming into the visitor! That doesn’t always go over well! Like Vito Corleone’s mafia enforcers in the Godfather, these fellas protect the familia from all predators who dare trespass on their turf! Don’t let those sweet faces fool you, these two are not pussy goats! Query: If you happen to know what breed of goat Wayne and Billy are, please let us know in the comments! An art auction to raise funds to feed and care for the animals will be held Dec 1-10! You can join the group at Bruce Sanctuary auctions

Meet Macho and his brother Pinto! These lovely fellas came from a farm where people would pay to walk alpacas. The owner of the farm decided she no longer wante...d males and offered them to Isabelle and Tyler. Ecstatic to rescue them, they accepted without hesitation! These charming animals arrived wearing halters. A halter is headgear that fits behind the ears and around the muzzle, and is used to lead or tie up animals. Upon arrival, the halters were immediately removed! Isabelle and Tyler were heartbroken to discover the scaring on Macho’s and Pinto’s faces; evidence that these halters were never taken off. Eventually the hair grew back on Macho’s young face (he’s 8 years old), but his older brother Pinto (20 years old) would remain scarred. Fun fact: Macho is actually an Alpllama, a mix of alpaca and llama! He was very shy and timid when he first arrived at the sanctuary! Now he approaches Isabelle and Tyler for cuddles and kisses. During my visit to the sanctuary, I found him to be a bit of a flirt! He kept staring at me, and when our gazes met, I couldn’t take my eyes off him! This macho man is irresistible! (One introduction each day leading up to the event. ) Meet Kaluha Kaluha was a school horse for 22 years, and so while she was ridden by many, she was bonded t...o none. She was basically a learning vehicle whose primary contact and function was to transport humans and respond to their commands. Consequently, because her contact was one of duty, she arrived with no real attachment to humans, and showed little personality. This beautiful sage will be 31 years old in January! I’ve read that horses live about one year for every three years that humans live. This makes her a senior equivalent to a 93 year old human! This explains why she tends to keep to herself, and couldn’t be bothered with the others. I can relate to that! Lol! Gelding Zaz is the only horse who can get away with steeling her food! Kaluha is Isabelle’s and Tyler’s first horse, and first horse rescue! This was the beginning of Isabelle’s love affair with horses! It appears the feeling has become mutual, as she is the first to greet Isabelle and Tyler when they enter the stable. Sometimes Isabelle rides her bareback for short jaunts. Kaluha, however is the one who decides where she wants to take her human on their little stroll! This old girl has earned the right to decide what she wants to do, with whom, and when! I will introduce you to one animal every day leading up to the event. Meet Mr. Muscovavich This colourful fella is a Muscovy Duck. The most obvious characteris...tic that gives him away is his red bumpy facial skin. If you know me, you know that I’m partial to a splash of red! Of all the lovely animals at the sanctuary, this guy caught my eye pretty fast! Mr. Muscovavich was Isabelle’s and Tyler’s first duck rescue! Because he fought with other male ducks (actually called drakes) to get the females’ attention, he had to be kept with a flock of chickens. Since the original owner eventually gave away all of her chickens, she kept him alone in a horse stall. Worried that he would lead a very lonely existence in solitary confinement, she posted an add on Kijiji to find him a good home. Isabelle and Tyler answered the call! Mr. Muscovavich was born with angel wings, a syndrome that primarily affects aquatic birds, such as geese and ducks. This means that the last joint of the wing is twisted with the wing feathers pointing out laterally, instead of lying against the body. He was already 3 years old when they got him, a little late to have his wings fixed! Although he can’t fly, he seems very content to waddle about exploring his wonderful diverse family at sanctuary! While Isabelle and Tyler had no other ducks at the time they rescued Mr. M, It wasn’t long before they acquired his buddy Freddy! Freddy has a thing for human ankles! Every now and then, he likes to take a nip at them - yikes! Side note: Fearing that free animals will succumb to cruelty or end up as bait or food for other animals, Isabelle is attentive to looking for these Kijiji adds. I will introduce you to one animal every day leading up to the event. Meet these sweet social pigs at the sanctuary! These affectionate sweeties are very domest...icated! So much so, that they live in the house with Isabell, Tyler, the dogs and cats! I think, they think, they ARE a dog or cat as I’ve seen videos of them laying across Isabelle’s lap sprawled out like a pooch or kitty! PigB’s best friends (yes, that’s her name) are actually cows, Bruce and Robin! She is very inclusive and indiscriminate, and always looking to expand her social circle! She has tried to befriend the horses by running with them or chasing them (it depends on your perspective)! While they tolerate her, she’s not really their type! PigC, another sweetie, was just a wee fella at 6 weeks old when he was introduced to the sanctuary. It really was much too soon to be taken away from his momma, however as nature would miraculously have it, PigB immediately started making breast milk to nurse him! She nursed him until he was 5 months old! Now they are bonded buddies! Recently, the sanctuary rescued two baby pot belly piglets. Lilou and Korbin are the sweetest and most gentle pigs you’ll ever meet! For now they are kept inside the house until they are sufficiently tamed, and big enough to hang with the bigger family members at the sanctuary (horses, cows, llamas...etc.). That’s exactly what Isabelle and Tyler did with PigC! Fun fact: Pigs make great pets! They are easily potty trained and very clean! In fact, most people can’t imagine this, but raising a piglet is so much easier than raising a puppy! An art auction to raise funds to feed and care for the animals will be held Dec 1-10! Meet James! James is actually boarding at Bruce Sanctuary while his owner makes some renovations to accommodate him! James is a very nice tall lad, but he’s som...ewhat regal. Like the queen (or rather, the king), you must first bow down to him before interacting with him. If, and only if, he bows back at you, can you touch him (unlike the queen/king ). With each passing day, Isabelle and Tyler are growing very attached to him! This week, the sanctuary was contacted by the SPCA to take in a wild Canada goose who broke her wing and was left behind by her flock. Isabelle and Tyler are hoping for a love connection between James and their new family member! A love connection may just be the thing that solidifies his permanent residence in this lovely tribe! Meet affectionate Bruce! This fella is sooo cuddly! About 15 months ago, Isabelle and Tyler saw an add on Kijiji for a young calf who needed to be bottle fed.... Without giving it a second thought, they immediately made arrangements to rescue him! The intent was to nurture him until he was old enough to be given to a good home. They found a home where the owner agreed to keep him among her horses. However, there was a glitch in their plan! They fell in love with him and after a couple months of bottle feeding him, they just couldn’t give him up. And so, they gave up their dream home instead, and found a place in the countryside where there was more land for Bruce to roam. This was the birth of Bruce Sanctuary!
