TIRES are one of the most important features of your vehicle and make a difference when it comes to your vehicle's maneuverability, performance and safety. You are able to accelerate, brake and steer your vehicle better with tires that are properly inflated and maintained. Here are some tips to help you out: Try to check your tire pressures 1-2 times a month and especially before long trips. Be sure to periodically check the pressure in your spare tire as well.... The best time to check your tires is when they are cool, not hot from the friction of the road after driving. The correct amount of inflation depends on your vehicle and the tires you use. Your owner's manual and the tire inflation pressure label (located on the door pillar, glove compartment or fuel tank door) lists the proper pressure. Under-inflated tires wear on their edges, while over-inflated tires wear more quickly in the centre. Even with proper inflation, your tires will eventually begin to deteriorate. Check your tread wear indicators, or feel free to stop by the shop and we will measure them for free! The minimum allowable tread depth is 2/32 of an inch, but tires lose their effectiveness much before then. Regular tire rotations will increase the life of your tires substantially, and cost very little. You can only have about a 3/32 tread difference between tires on any all-wheel drive or 4x4 vehicle. The reason is, with the different tread depth, the tires will rotate at different rates, putting unwanted stress on the all-wheel drive train that can cause damage.
Have you noticed this hanging from your rearview mirror after your last visit to us? This means we have had one or all of your wheels off, and therefore need to RE-TORQUE your wheel nuts. Hint: it's not just for fun, this is a VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE. The best part is, its FREE! No appointment necessary and takes less than 5 minutes! Here are a few points on WHY it's so important:... Wheels come off when the wheel nuts holding the wheel to the vehicle lose clamp force and become loose. Thermal contractions - this occurs when the nuts are mounted at shop temperature in a cold environment. As the nuts and bolts cool, clamping force is lost. Improper mating surfaces. This is referring to non-flat mating surfaces, damaged or bent hubs and wheels, or worn or elongated bolt holes. Excessive braking. This can result in high temperatures causing wheel bolts to expand and contract as temperatures vary. This causes the wheel nut to lose it's grip on the bolt, resulting in loss of torque. Age. Over time wheel nuts and bolts degrade and the clamp force diminishes to a point where it is possibly insufficient to secure the wheel adequately.
