Bridging the Gap 10.12.2020

, Last night, York University experienced one of its most tense clashes over the Israeli/Palestinian conflict in recent years. While it is invaluable to show solidarity with what we believe in, both through hosting events and exercising our right to protest, any engagement in violence or intimidation is counterproductive. Students are rightfully emotional about the circumstances back home, but intimidation and violence toward othe...rs cannot be the only solutions to these concerns. We, as a mixture of students from Jewish, Muslim, Palestinian and Israeli backgrounds need mutual respect for one-another, and a willingness to engage in humanizing the other while listening to their stories. Only then may we be able to avoid students feeling unsafe on campus when this difficult topic arises, and when we feel vulnerable in sharing our pain and experience with others. . Bridging the Gap was formed to create a space on campus where mutual understanding between people who are normally disconnected and misunderstood is possible. If you ever need a space to decompress, and be heard, we are here for you. We extend thanks to York University security for working to keep everybody safe last night, and we hope you’ll join us at the table soon. Sincerely,
