Bubba's Dog Grooming N Pet Care

I groomed your dog today. I carried her neglected body to my table and slowly - so very slowly and delicately - peeled her from the shell of mats. Her head rare...ly lifted from my table. Her paws were tucked under her thin body. My blades stuttered and grew hot, one after another. I took each minute to give us both a break. I rubbed that space between your eyes, whispered how you deserved better, and held back my tears. You needed my strength, not my pity. We took the bath slow too. I made sure my hands knew every bone jutting from the tent of your skin. I found every sinkhole between your muscles. I cleansed every inch I could reach. I picked the fluffiest towels, wrapped you gently, and pulled your tense body to mine. We sat and you peered over my shoulder at your reflection in the mirror. A quiet curiosity peeked from behind your anxiety. We took a break. We settled into the play area. Your eyes darted nervously around as I touched your paws to the fleece blanket next to me. You didn’t settle though. Timidly, you mechanically moved towards me. One paw. Then the other. My lap was inviting to you, and again I held back my tears. I simply pulled you in and held you close. When it was time to get back the table, you finally stood. Shakily. Your knees wobbled. Your neck hung. But I praised that brave girl. I stripped the last remains of your coat from your body, settled you into a fuzzy rug and wrapped you with a blanket. As inoffensively as possible, I cleaned my station. You watched. Secretly, I did too. Your eyes were trusting and still so very scared. I laid out your pelt like a rug. I made sure it was in plain view. I thank goodness for the gumption of my boss, because my voice stuck in my throat like a nettle. Every wicked thing I had thought about your owner while you were on my table gathered into a raging white noise. You ran to me. Before he took you home, you ran to me. I need you to know I cried for you. I need you to know that my heart aches for you. I need you to know, I tried. I groomed your dog today and found more humanity in the canine. - J. Mowry
