Hip Hop and Basketball share an undeniable common culture. There's connective tissue between the social roots, style, and worldviews from which a majority of Black athletes and artists see their sport and their craft entwined. Now, more than ever, Hip Hop and basketball are expressing a new, even stronger commonality; the need to get loud and speak truth to power regarding the systemic racism and social injustices Black individuals and communities face on a daily basis. Join Hart House as they engage members of the sports media community (Kayla Grey of TSN and Donnovan Bennett of Sportsnet) and online audience.

Jeff Braff (Emm 1T9, MPS) discusses in a recent episode of CBC Radio's "Tapestry" his unique view of the pandemic as a hospital chaplain in Toronto "Each night he's at St. Michael's Hospital, he visits the families of patients who want his comforting advice, partly guided by his Tibetan Buddhist training. But Braff is also a former infectious disease epidemiologist, who worked in public health in California. He's been able to look at the pandemic through both a spiritual an...d clinical lens." "Out of love, my mom always told me, Kayla, you’re a Black woman you always have to work twice as hard. But now when I look at my son, I want to tell him, Levi, you’re a Black man, and you’re just enough. I want to tell my son that he his hair, his skin, the way he talks, the way he presents, what he likes, what he doesn’t like is enough."

U.K.-based e-magazine "The Zen Gateway" has published an interview with #EmmanuelCollege student Paul Baswick on the 108-mile Mra-thon he will be running from his home in Port Colborne to Emmanuel College on October 26-27. Paul is taking on the challenge as a fundraiser for the Daily Bread Food Bank as part of a term project on classic Buddhist texts, and as a way to connect to the EC community during this time of physical distancing. One of my big projects this semester ...is to come up with a plan for engaging with Buddhist texts in a creative way. I can’t compose worth beans so a rock opera based on the Pli Canon was out. But I can at least run, and Buddhism and distance running have long been linked in my mind.
