Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) plastic piping is presently widely used in domestic plumbing and heating systems in Ontario including Greater Toronto Area, since PEX piping is easy to install and costs less. Though we have seen very few failure problems with PEX piping in Ontario, a class action lawsuit was issued in 2011 against IPEX Inc, alleging that IPEX products including KITEC, Plumbetter, IPEX AQUA, WarmRite, Kitec XPA, AmbioComfort, XPA, KERR Controls or Plomberie Am...éliorée may be subject to premature failure and otherwise may not perform in accordance with the reasonable expectation of users. Many of these IPEX products are solid wall PEX piping with no layer of embedded aluminum. Most of the PEX piping are called PEX-AL-PEX which has a thin layer of aluminum embedded between the inner and outer walls to prevent oxygen moving through the pipe walls. The other alleged issue with IPEX fittings is with high levels of zinc, resulting in corrosion and failure over time. IPEX settled, and set up a $125 million fund to provide compensation for those with piping and fitting failures. KITEC - a cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) plastic piping - usually blue on cold water piping and red or orange on hot water piping - was manufactured by IPEX Inc between 1995 and 2007, was used in domestic hot and cold water plumbing, and in-floor and baseboard heating systems in new construction and renovations in residential homes and condominiums in Ontario. Monitor for white corrosion on brass fittings and dark spots and/or blisters forming on the piping. Since the KITEC piping and fittings may deteriorate or fail due to excessive water pressure or water running at temperatures hotter than the manufacturer’s rating, heating systems with KITEC piping and fittings are more vulnerable to failure than domestic cold water piping and fittings. Since the condominium reserve fund may not cover the cost of KITEC piping replacement, proper replacement may cost the condominium suite owners in Greater Toronto Area over $6,000 for one-bedroom condominium suites, and over 9,500 for two-bedroom suites.. We recommend to replace KITEC plumbing with copper pipes.
