We know it seems intimidating to learn a new skill. But in the #unionconstruction industry, you'll never be left alone to figure it out yourself. Here's what one of our unionized ironworkers had to say: "You get to work with experienced journeypersons who take you under their wing and personally teach you everything from your first day of hire." - Adam, Ironworker... From teaching you how to use tools, to recognizing hazards, on-the-job mentorship helps guide you on your career journey. Learn more about skilled trades at https://bta.ca

Looking for career options that you'll enjoy and be proud of? The construction industry does the trick! "I've had many jobs in my life, I needed a career. Something that I was proud, that I could look back on, that my children could be proud of, and I knew I wanted to work with my hands. Something challenging, team based, that crew comradory and build something together. I found that the electrical trade would give me all of those." - Tyler, Electrician... From The Globe and Mail: Terry Parker, executive director of Building Trades of Alberta, said the loss of the KXL project is significant in many respects. There was not only the jobs associated with construction of the pipeline, he said, but also the potential for work on maintenance of the pipeline and pump stations. And further down the line, there would have been work associated with increased capacity for bitumen production.
BTA ED Terry Parker joined CBC Calgary's Eyeopener this morning to discuss the impacts the KXL decision will have on union jobs in Alberta and beyond. "Keystone was to be a template on how pipelines should be constructed: with good jobs, the environment and Indigenous inclusion at the forefront. It is incredibly unfortunate that template will now be trashed." Check it out.
ICYMI: BTA ED Terry Parker was on the Danielle Smith show this morning to discuss the repeal of KXL's presidential permit and what it means for union jobs in Alberta and south of the border.
BTA ED Terry Parker will be on 630 CHED and Global News Radio 770 CHQR today at 10 a.m. discussing Keystone XL and the impact the cancellation of the project will have on union workers. Tune in.
BTA media release: Expected decision to repeal Keystone XL’s presidential permit will affect thousands of union jobs While this move is a significant blow, moving ahead the Building Trades of Alberta will continue to advocate for projects that put unionized people to work in all industries members operate in, including oil and gas, commercial and residential construction, infrastructure, maintenance, green energy and more. "The creation of union jobs and support by Indigenous investors will help convince U.S. president-elect Joe Biden that the Keystone XL pipeline fits into his "Build Back Better" agenda." Much of the work on KXL north of the border is proudly being done by BTA affiliates including, welders, pipefitters, teamsters and labourers.
This is awesome
ICYMI: Suncor Energy announced yesterday it will become the main operator of Syncrude by the end of next year.
The report highlights five facilities immediately north of Edmonton that produce hydrogen, including Shell Canada Ltd.’s Scotford refining complex, the NorthWest Refinery and a Nutrien Ltd. fertilizer plant.
"On Sunday, the province reported 1,584 cases, surpassing Saturday’s record high by almost 250 and recording more new infections than Ontario and Quebec which had 1,534 and 1,154 new cases respectively. Both provinces have significantly higher populations than Alberta."
Today, BTA Executive Director Terry Parker sent letters to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Leader of the Official Opposition Erin O'Toole and Leader of the NDP Jagmeet Singh to request meetings with each federal leader to discuss the current state of Alberta, and ways we can all work to help support its economy. "Here in Alberta, both the pandemic and a sharp decline in oil prices have dealt our province a devastating double blow. This has left Alberta, which has contributed greatly to the national interest through both healthy transfer payments and by training and providing tens of thousands of skilled trades professionals, in a difficult situation." See the full letter sent to the Prime Minister this morning, below.
Next fall’s municipal election in Edmonton will be an interesting one

This is a big deal Today is a great day for science and humanity, Albert Bourla, Pfizer’s chairman and chief executive, said in a statement. We are reaching this critical milestone in our vaccine development program at a time when the world needs it most with infection rates setting new records, hospitals nearing over-capacity and economies struggling to reopen.
