Build Love Project

It’s officially been 1 year since we welcomed the Gorski family into their newly renovated house. We were able to improve a space which allowed Bonnie, who lives with MS, to stay in her home, with her family. Build Love 2019 was a project that came to fruition via the love and hard work of so many amazing humans - team members, friends, family, businesses, volunteers, and donors. 2020 has been a struggle for many, but it can’t take away the strength and kindness of a community like ours that is always there to step in and lend a hand. As an organization rooted in love and helping our neighbours, Build Love holds the Black community in our hearts. This is an opportunity to listen and learn from Black voices, and think about how we can improve this world through a lens of anti-racism. There are many organizations ready to share knowledge, and it's up to each of us to learn and do better.

We love seeing the transformation of a space and how it can positively impact lives. Before the renovation, Vienna couldn't even enter the bathroom on her own. Along with widening the door, a curbless shower and custom vanity ensures Vienna can access the bathroom on her own, providing her with transition to independence as she grows older. The bathroom features a Jack and Jill style access, so her parents also have easy access if some assistance is required. Improving the function and form of a space to truly reflect the needs of the owner takes a great team, from design to construction. We are so thankful to the team of trades, suppliers and sponsors who make beautiful projects like this possible for such amazing people.

"You guys promised us a spot for it and you guys gave us the perfect place " Bonnie Gorski This is the result of Stuart's COVID-19 project. Back when the Gorski project was in the initial planning stages, Bonnie asked if we could accommodate mounting an antique car for Stuart. We just got photos of the completed project. Stuart is very talented with metal and antique cars, and this front end is a custom art installation that came off of the original car. If you or anyon...e you know is looking for anything like this, Stuart is your guy! Thanks for sharing Bonnie!

THROW BACK We are looking back at this very special day, where we smashed through the walls at the Gorski home to create a space for Bonnie to live the life she deserves. Thank you for building love with us!

May long weekend, the unofficial start to summer! When we gave the keys back to Stuart and Bonnie it was already chilly outside. Now that the weather is nice, they can finally enjoy their beautiful backyard. (Fingers crossed the warmth is here to stay! ) P.S. - Who's planting their garden this weekend?

FORE! Golf season is officially open! We may not have a Build Love golf tournament currently scheduled, but we can reminisce about last years and celebrate that we continue to move forward as a community.

Build Love has a history of serving groups and people who are at risk of developing severe cases of COVID-19, and we take concerns about spreading the virus very seriously. Since COVID-19 precautions became a serious concern to our 2020 projects, the Build Love Team has been thinking long and hard about how we can respond. We looked at information from Public Health Canada, considered the effects on our sponsors, and checked in with what we felt was the right thing to do befo...re making this decision. Ultimately, we decided that the best thing to do for 2020 is to press pause. Specifically because we love our community, we believe the best way to serve it right now is to do everything in our power to push the curve on this pandemic. That affects our ability to hold large fundraising events, such as our Kick Off and movie nights, and our ability to bring together all the people it takes to make a project like our yearly build happen. To be fair to our potential recipients, our sponsors, our team, and everyone else touched by Build Love, this was the only decision we could make in the face of so much uncertainty. But that doesn't mean we are going anywhere! We will use the next several months to talk to our communities about how each of us can make a difference, to strengthen our team, to prepare for our 2021 project, and find whatever ways we can to improve our community. We will continue to build love, maybe in different ways, but certainly expanding that love to encompass our healthcare system and workers and even the global community. If you've been following Build Love, you might assume that we only provide renovations for those facing physical disability. But our desire to break down barriers goes beyond the physical. Build Love brings the community together to transform the home of someone facing adversity, especially those with a history of volunteerism and giving back. We know a free home renovation can change lives, whether it's for a grandmother who's taken in her grandchildren, a refugee family, ...someone struggling with illness, queer youth who often struggle to find accepting housing, or one of many other worthy examples. We all know someone who's been handed a tough hand and deserves the life-changing experience of being the #buildlove recipient. And they are probably the least likely to apply themselves.
