My amazing and talented student Lacey playing a Traditional Japanese song called Sakura. We set her keyboard to a traditional Japanese instrument called a #Koto. This is the result: inspired by the beautiful cherry blossoms we're seeing in the trees. We had a lot of fun with it.

First week back to piano after a very refreshing break. Did everyone enjoy their winter off? I am so proud of my students practicing during their vacation. I assigned several students the task of writing a piece of music over the break and I am BLOWN AWAY by the results. Today I had the treat of hearing this original piece performed: "Yankee deedle" by Porscha, one of my talented students.

You would think my students would slow down with winter break so close- but no, they continue to amaze me. This is "The Mouse in a Coal Bin" by Clifford Poole, who passed away in 2003. It's fun and full of energy! After a long day I always feel energized after teaching Sienna and Ava: two bundles of creativity. Sienna and I are still working on this song but I think it's sounding great so far!

When I read this quote I imagine Beethoven saying it in a gruff, earthy, booming voice with confidence in his words. Yesterday I had a student who was giving herself a hard time for not playing a song perfectly, and I was very thankful to remember this quote. "To play a wrong note is insignificant. To play without passion is inexcusable." Every individual is imperfect, but nearly every human relates to music in some way or another. When we learn music, it's not the same as learning math: it's an art, a passion, a form of expression, and an experience. This week featured the introduction of the "Cupcake Test" at my studio for my student's scales and technique. Students tend to get anxious when they hear the word "test", but cupcakes make everything less scary. When we check our progress, we aren't looking for pass or fail, A+ or B. Just like sticking a toothpick into a cake to see if it's baked all the way through, we are testing to see which scales need more "time in the oven". Students learn which scales need more work..., and which ones are good to go!
