8:30 a.m. - Pier Park Fire Update The "W" will have to come down. About air quality.... The air quality in New Westminster is extremely bad this morning. People are asked to avoid the Downtown area completely. I have had reports from people who live Downtown about experiencing smell and fumes. Some left their windows and balcony doors open overnight. There is no requirement to vacate, but outdoors the fire chief says the air is toxic near the fire. Keep doors and windows closed. If you are feeling ill, short of breath, or having trouble, consider getting away from the area for the day. Do not be afraid to call the nurses line at 811. This includes people who have business or appointments in the Downtown area, please stay away from the area today. Mayor Jonathan Cote has just confirmed, sadly, that the W will have to come down. The old pier part of the park will not be salvageable. The fire is contained but may last a few more days, and can not be extinguished until the deck is removed. Thank you to our firefighters.
