Happy Wednesday! As a mom and SLP working with toddlers, elementary, and high school aged children this video is pretty accurate! https://youtu.be/MiqSsX2--as
Happy Friday Today we are celebrating 7 months of successful teletherapy sessions. We are thrilled to be back offering face to face therapy sessions in the clinic but love that we are able to provide the same quality therapy sessions virtually for many of our families We have learned so much from each other through this new world of virtual therapy but one of the most valuable things to remember is that you as the SLP are the most important part of your virtual therapy ...session. Your child looks forward to seeing you every session. You are there for the child and family to provide quality therapy, coaching, strategies, problem solving, guidance and support and make a real connection with the child and that makes all the difference. You have all the tools to help the child to become a confident communicator and are the best thing that the child has behind that green screen Our guiding principles remain the same during teletherapy: We always involve family members in the journey. We collaborate with other professionals and agencies. We grow, learn, change and have fun together. We connect with your child because that is the most effective way that goals can be achieved. We help give your child the voice they deserve. We are committed to making a difference in your child’s life. #virtualtherapyslp #teletherapy #teletherapist #happyfriday #privatepracticeslp #confidentcommunicators #slpeeps #slpsofinstagram #slpsgodigital #greenscreentherapy #greenscreentherapymagic #speechandlanguagetherapy #peachiespeechieshirt
Happy Halloween!!
"Sometimes being a brother is even better than being a superhero." #siblings We think our young ones with special communication needs would agree! A child’s big brother or sister plays a unique role in their life, acting every day as a role model, play partner, protector, rival, confidant, and so much more. When it comes to language, there are many ways for children to help their younger sibling’s development. Studies have also shown that older siblings can benefit from this experience. It can strengthen the social skills, reduce feelings of competitiveness for parents’ attention, and ultimately strengthen the sibling relationship.#siblings #speechtherapy #slpslos2be #speechtherapy #privatepracticeslp #thesetwo confidentcommunicators
Every child deserves a voice! October is AAC awareness month and we help children in our clinic be successful communicators and part of that journey may include teaching a child and their family how to use the device. Getting a communication device is only the first step of becoming a competent communicator and there are many things that go into this process. As communication partners, we need to take the time to model core and fringe vocabulary on the device through play,... books, songs and everyday activities, keep the device available at all times and provide multiple opportunities for the child to explore the device and practice expressing themselves. Not being able to speak is not the same as having nothing to say. #aac #aacslp #aacawarenessmonth #privatepracticeslp #confidentcommunicators #slppeeps #slp #slp2be #speechtherapy #lampwordsforlife #corevocabulary See more

Super excited for tomorrow!!
We are so proud to be a sponsor again this year and are looking forward to the virtual walk to raise money and awareness for children with Down Syndrome in the Halton region!
Clinic Announcement! Our doors continue to remain closed, however we are looking forward to re-opening again. We miss all of our clients that have not been able to participate in teletherapy very much. We are currently working on directives from the Provincial Government and our governing body so that we can develop protocols to provide you with the most effective and safe experience. We are in the process of ordering PPE and staying up to date on best practices and safety measures. Stay tuned for updates! In the interim we are excited to continue to provide teletherapy to existing and new clients. Please contact us for more details at [email protected].
Our Speech-Language Pathologists have given you a few helpful tips on how to communicate while wearing a mask. We know it can be challenging & were here to help. Check out their tips here: https://bit.ly/2WYvriV
Im a Speech-Language Pathologist." "So you teach people how to talk?" "No. Sit back for a moment and let me tell you what a Speech-Language Pathologist pours their heart into day after day... We help a person, whose brain can no longer send the correct signals to produce basic sentences, answer the simplest of questions so he can participate in social activities with others... We teach memory strategies to someone with dementia so she can remember the names of her grandch...ildren... We help a child on the autism spectrum with their social skills, in the hopes that the bullying will stop and they will make one friend before the end of the school year... We rehab someones swallowing muscles so they can have a sip of McAlisters ice tea, because it is their absolute favorite... We give hope to the parents who have finally accepted their child is delayed, after the doctor repeatedly tells them he is just a late talker... We teach someone with new cochlear implants how to communicate without sign language after a lifetime of deafness being all they know... We ease a stuttering childs anxiety when they are preparing to stand up in front of their class to give a book report... We show someone how to apply a passy-muir valve to their tracheostomy so they can use their voice to tell their family "I love you."... We have the difficult conversation with a family to tell them that grandmas cognitive impairments make her unsafe to go back to her home alone... We help a child pronounce certain sounds correctly, after years of others reinforcing the wrong way, when they reach an age where their impairment is no longer considered cute... We help a young, intelligent woman who has had a massive stroke learn to use a speech-generating device so that she can return to her vibrant and capable self...We place voice prostheses to allow a Laryngeal Cancer survivor to tell his family he loves them after cancer so cruelly took his voice from him....and we think about these people when were falling asleep at night and we pray for them and we spend time off the clock and our own money on things that we think may help them even the slightest... and we constantly put up with being misunderstood and overlooked. So if you know a Speech Pathologist, tell them thank you and give them a hug, because I promise you, after spending their days pouring their hearts into others, they need someone to replenish theirs. - Source unknown

My clients are having so much fun with my interactive powerpoint show that I created for teletherapy while working on motor speech therapy goals. Fun, engaging and allows for lots of repetition! Was able to get 100 repetitions of our target words in this one activity. I also used this resource with other clients to target building vocabulary, auditory memory and comprehension skills. While I give the child information about the mystery object for them to guess it helps build their listening skills and critical thinking skills. Over the 19 years in my career I have celebrated Better Speech and Hearing month in many different ways, but this year is different for so many reasons. In the beginning of March 2020, with the fear of COVID-19 becoming a reality, many speech-language pathologists began to look at alternative methods to provide children with therapy at a distance. Fortunately, our field has recognized teletherapy as an effective method to allow children to continue to receive speech and langu...age therapy during the COVID-19 outbreak. I am fortunate that I am able to provide this service to children in my clinic and so happy to be able to see their smiles and energy once again. I am missing my clients that I have not been able to see through telepractice but happy to receive email and phone updates. I am so thankful to have collaborated with so many creative, talented and amazing SLPs to help make this all possible. So, thank you to ALL of you! Excited to continue to learn and grow this month! #mayspeechandhearingmonth #betterhearingandspeechmonth #privatepracticeslps #slpsofinstagram #slpeeps #slplife #slpsgodigital #speechandhearingmonth #teletherapyslp #entrepreneurlife See more
I planned this super cute activity for a little guy today working on early vocabulary and motor speech goals. I mirrored my ipad to my video platform to share this app - Peekabookids. We practiced our target words and when we opened up each barn door I had the same toy farm animal that magically appeared. I put each animal in the mud (ground coffee beans) and after we found them all we washed them in the bath. I set up my activity and raised my ipad up high on a stand, mirror...ed the camera on my ipad, then shared it to my screen through screen mirroring to my video platform so that they could see each animal get dirty and washed. I had the parents hide the farm animals to find around the house as an extension activity after out session and then give them a bath at home. Super fun! #teletherapyslp #slpsofinstagram #privatepracticeslp #confidentcommunicators #slptherapyideas #slppeeps #thinkoutsidethebox #learningthroughplaying #motorspeechtherapy See more

ANNOUNCEMENT - TEMPORARY CLINIC CLOSURE The health and safety of our clients, families, team members and the community is very important to us. As such, in light of recent events and careful consideration, we have made the decision to close the clinic effective immediately until April 4th, 2020 in support of early containment of COVID-19. At such time we will reassess the situation to determine if further measures are required. We recognize that this is a challenging situati...on, but given recent developments and government recommendations, we believe this self isolation strategy is the right thing to do to ensure everyones health and safety. During this time, we will be checking our voicemail and email and will try to be responsive as possible. We are exploring other options such as tele-practice to clients on a case by case basis to be able to continue to offer speech and language services in the upcoming weeks. We appreciate everyones support, commitment and understanding during this difficult time. Please stay safe and healthy. Confident Communicators

Pointing is a sign that a baby has developed certain social and communication skills. It shows us that the baby can get someones attention, send a message, and attempt to influence someones actions or reactions to whatever it is he is pointing to, all with his tiny finger.
Confident Communicators is very pleased to announce our newest team member to the clinic. Amanda Ferrans, Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) comes to us with an impressive resume and amazing enthusiasm for helping children become confident communicators. Welcome Amanda!
Shared reading between parents and very young children, including infants, is associated with stronger vocabulary skills by age 3. According to research publish...ed in The Journal of Pediatrics, this is also true for children who genetically may be vulnerable to barriers in learning, attention and behavior development. You can learn more about the value of shared reading through our Im Ready and ABC and Beyond workshops, programs and resources. Visit our website to find out more.
Eye contact is very important in terms of a childs brain, social, and emotional development, Navsaria says. "Its one of the key ways in which we make connections with other human beings."
As one door closes, another one opens.
