Today we celebrate women. We’d like to thank all of our female staff and volunteers that have helped make the Burnaby Hospice Society what it is today. May we continue to go forward advocating for the visibility of women and the work left to be done. #internationalwomensday

"One-year death anniversaries are often difficult and filled with a variety of emotions. They are times when people naturally reflect on what was happening in their life and in the life of the person who died one year ago. They can bring new surges and waves of #Grief. Starting this week, millions of Canadians will begin to experience the one-year death anniversary of someone special in their life who died during the pandemic, whether from COVID-19 or another cause. For mos...t, this one-year death anniversary will continue to be experienced alone, isolated from friends, family and community, due to ongoing public health restrictions. The Canadian Grief Alliance (CGA) is marking the anniversary of the first death from COVID-19 in Canada, March 8, by amplifying our message: Canada needs a #NationalGriefStrategy. Canadians who are suffering need access to timely grief support. The time is now. The CGA has released a video series to bring attention to the urgent need for a national, coordinated and comprehensive response to the pandemic of grief. We continue to advocate at all levels and work together to #MakeGriefAPriority. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pklMbW73hV8"

Tomorrow is National Bereavement Day. Grief and bereavement support is an essential element of all care at the end of one’s life. This year, the CHPCA invites Canadians on a shared journey that fosters compassion and encourages them to cope with their grief by supporting each other through living and grieving. We might be physically distant, but grief brings us together. We learn to live with the loss and grief in ways that maintain and honour our bond with the person who die...d but don’t limit our capacity for joy, pleasure and a meaningful life. At this trying time, we might be physically distant, but we are emotionally, spiritually and socially connected through our grief. Check out this link for more information: https://www.chpca.ca/campaigns/bereavementday

During a time when society emphasizes being thankful, this feeling may not resonate as loudly with youth and families who are grieving Special days and celeb...rations can feel quite different after a person in our life has died. What was once a joyful time of gathering, can feel like a painful reminder of the very thing we are missing most No matter how much time has passed, certain days can feel difficult and stir up feelings of grief As hard as special days can be, they also give us the chance to connect with family members and friends, to remember the person who died, and share memories It can be an invitation to support one another as we feel what we feel today. Be gentle with yourself, there isn’t one way to do special days or occasions. Life has changed and what once made sense on these days, may not make sense now. Not forcing yourself to feel or act a certain way, instead letting it be exactly what is it. We welcome you to be kind to yourself as emotional triggers can come up unexpectedly. A song, a place, or a smell can bring on a flood of emotions and this is normal. Finding things to be grateful for can be done any day of the year, and can be a way to feel more grounded Gratitude doesn’t mean we ignore the parts that feel hard, or pretend that we haven’t experienced pain/loss. It’s about finding moments of appreciation in our life, and creating a space where conflicting feelings can exist and don’t cancel each other out. Feeling grateful doesn’t mean we aren’t grieving or have forgotten our person. Things to ponder Can you feel grateful and feel grief? What is one way you can honour the person in your life who has died? What is something you are grateful for? What is something that feels hard? Decide what makes sense for you and your family as you navigate meaningful days. Perhaps commemorating instead of celebrating feels right for some folks. Getting rid of expectations and letting it be what it is
