The answer to "Are you doing okay?" has always been yes. While answering yes to this question is great for masking our true 2021 emotions, it's not great for understanding what my patient is feeling while on my table. When people are face down during treatment, my only clues to what they're feeling are their:... 1. words 2. physical actions (flinching) and 3. their breath While (I think) I'm great at understanding all 3 clues, I've been finding that 2021 requires more. By changing the way I ask "are you okay?" I'm hoping for a more honest response from my patient, one that honours their sensitivity in the moment. Allowing the patient to disagree with me and assert themselves when they want more pressure protects individuals who are shy about expressing when they need less.
