To celebrate the end of winter, we’ve started a new tradition, the April canoe one night-er. This short jaunt allows us to get back into the swing of things, use those paddling muscles that have been ignored for far too long and enjoy some bug free and mostly snow free weather. Since the lakes are still frozen, we look for a river not too far from the City of Winnipeg. Last year, we paddled the Seine River, from Giroux to near Ste. Anne (about 30 log jams, not really recommended). This year, we set our sights on the Whitemouth River, south of Hadashville.

I think this might be our new tradition: First warm and sunny weekend with open water, we go canoeing. Last year, we travelled the Seine river from Giroux to Ste.Anne and this year, we decided to paddle the Whitemouth from the Berger Peatmoss Plant road creek (watch out for the gates!) to the bridge in Hadashville. Although most of the travel past the number 1 highway towards the next bridge was boring, the rest of the travels were great.
