5 Things They Didn't Tell You In Coaching School Starting your own coaching business can be one of the most exciting and scary times of your life. On the one hand, most new coaches are often ecstatic to have finally found their calling and the possibility of making a difference doing something they love. Yet on the other hand, so many new coaches are anxious, if not downright terrified, about their ability to build a successful business and support themselves through coaching...Continue reading

My current coach is great, but I heard this again today. It’s a phrase I hear a lot from newer coaches, struggling to move on from their current coach, on their journey into coaching and building a viable coaching practice. And, as a senior coach who has been in the industry for a long time, I would like to suggest and encourage anyone who is serious about their development as a coach or business owner please, there should be no buts about it. Keeping your needs and... optimal learning front and center is important. Working with your current coach is not a life-time commitment, nor should it be. In my life as a coach I have benefited greatly from working with a diversity of coaches, trainers, mentors and teachers. I learned something different from all their unique strengths and experiences. With my first coaches, I learned a great deal about coaching skills and coaching models. From others, I learned a lot about how to have a great coaching business and a great life. And a few mentors along the way just fed and elevated my soul. So when I work with coach clients, I tell them there are no long-term commitments. Their growth, development and happiness are what matters, and they are free to leave whenever they have a sense it is time to move on. If your coach is really invested in your well-being, they are not going to hold it against you.

Sometimes The Universe gives you a message to pass on. In the last week or two, I have chatted with several coaches who had a great idea, or a fantastic opportunity, that they really wanted to do but simply lacked the confidence or expertise to pull it off all by themselves. Sometimes, a little coaching or mentoring with the right person can make all the difference. However, since so many good ideas coaches have do die on the vine, I would suggest, that rather than listen...ing to the voice of doubt, whenever you can't figure out how to capitalize on a great opportunity all by yourself, reach out and collaborate. Our coaching community is full of great people with diverse backgrounds, training, contacts and experience. Whatever your great opportunity, your chances of finding the right person - who is on the same wavelength, who can bring the missing expertise, and allow you both to achieve something much greater than either could do separately are fantastic. Yes, you do need to date before you marry. Meaning, it is wise to take any possible partnership a step at a time and ensure you share values, resonate together, and can figure out a way to fairly share the work and the rewards. However, since most coaches do so much of their work by themselves, a good collaboration can add a ton of value, and joy, to your practice. Some of the most fun I have had in my years of coaching, have been when I teamed up with a colleague and did something that scared us both. If you can dream it, you can find someone to help you pull it off. And you might find yourself doing some good business, and having a ton of fun. xxx Steve.

Here Is My Take On The Worst Advice Coaches Receive Regarding Business Development I was talking with another new coach recently who was exhausted and discouraged at the poor results they were getting trying to find even a few good coaching clients. When I asked them what they have been trying, they said that the instructor in their coach training class urged them to, offer coaching to everyone you know. In my opinion, this is one of the worst pieces of business advice co...Continue reading
