Yesterday the Provincial governmnet presented its budget. The Higgs government which is well known to be fiscally conservative laid out a very different kind of budget than what most people expected. However as with most budgets there are those who feel it doesn't go far enough or perhaps to the right things. Here to speak to us on where things might have fallen short for local business people is John Wishart, the CEO of the Chamber of Commerce Greater Moncton / Chambre de Commerce Grand Moncton.

It's been about a month since the last council meeting which made this one a very impressive four hours. There was a lot of the docket and not everything was overly civil. Lots to hear and see however for your viewing pleasure it has been condensed to just nine minutes. Enjoy!

Our apologies. Oddly the graphic image under COVID-19 on the GNB site was not the most recent one of the rollout plan. Please find today's below.

Provincial Covid-19 Update Feb.18th. (stream was interrupted to say they could not provide translation - audio is from the floor and in the language it was spoken). - Four new cases in the province, all in zone four - Zone four going back to Orange. - NB to alter it's vaccine plan and follow other jurisdictions that are giving one shot to those less vulnerable allowing for a second shot to more of those who are vulnerable.... - One dose provides 95% protection fourteen days after. The second shot is to come at 28 days. - The second dose may be stretched out to 90 days in some cases. - The most vulnerable will get their second does within 42 days. Those who don't get it after 90 days - we don't have that much information on how effective it will be. But right now we don't believe that will be an issue and even if there is a delay we don't think it will be an issue. - Getting more people the first dose and the most vulnerable the second dose when scheduled will have the greatest overall benefit to our healthcare system. - It's not a perfect solution but will offer out best course of action in fighting the virus. - Delaying the second dose is found to be the best way to get as many people as possible vaccinated as quickly as possible. - More information is coming very soon as to how they can register to be vaccinated. - By the end of March all care home residents and employees should be vaccinated and starting in April they will setup clinics to vaccinate those over 85 who are not living in care homes. - After that group the next group will be those 70 and over starting with those aged 80-84. Questions: Q: What might happen after March break? A: The variant does carry greater risks. We're hoping to be an area of stabilization. We're discouraging inter-zone travel but if they do travel outside the province you will have to self-isolate for 14 days but that comes with risk as well as family members can become infected so we're askng people to stay put. Q: With more families coming forward with the strict rules around visiting family members - will the province look at doing things case by case rather than a blanket rule? A: This has been heartbreaking we know. We're working with the RHA to find a path forward for everyone. Protecting our most vulberable is what this is all about. We do have excemptions for passionate visits. Someone who is palliative can have up to ten who can visit one person at a time. Every effort is being made to get families in at end of life and will continue to progress on that that we can announce next week. Q: How is the province tracking who is vaccinated and how it can be shared or not because of privacy rules. A: Both RHAs are tracking this now. And the dashborad is updated weekly. Not sure what more info you'd need publicly. Q: When will grocery store workers be considered under this new rollout plan? A: We still have the list of priority and the idea is to get everyone vaccinated as soon as possible.

Here's the 2 hour Moncton city council condensed to just 11 mins. A lot to cover in that time including things like questions around 'why now?' on paying more for equates to bylaw enforcement officers and why are we not paying down the debt with such a large reserve fund? And how affective will body cams really be for the public? This and more in Moncton City Council Wrap for the meeting held on Feb.16th.

The YMCA of Greater Moncton has closed both of their fitness facilities based on the decision of the province of New Brunswick to revert the entire province to the Orange Alert Level. The YMCA says they will remain closed until the province returns to the Yellow Alert Level. We have made this difficult decision because this is the right thing to do. said YMCA of Greater Moncton CEO Zane Korytko. No funds will be removed from member’s accounts during this closure and update...s to members will go out as soon as they have new information. The closure affects the YMCA’s Health, Fitness and Aquatics Centres at our 30 War Veterans location as well as the new YMCA Moncton North location. Their Adult Day, Alternative to Suspension, Plus One and YCAN programs will continue to operate. The ReConnect outreach program will continue to serve the community’s most vulnerable citizens. Their Childcare centre and After school program remain open.

Here is three hours of city council down to just ten minutes! Very interesting to see the interaction between councillors and a developer around the heritage property on Highfield St. The United Way is looking for a boost and Downtown Moncton Centreville Inc's budget for this year is short almost 7%. What does this mean for their $250K yearly committment for the Avenir Centre? Plus who named themselves to the Regional Policing Authority Board? And what about the lights? This and more on the Council Wrap for the meeting on November 16th.

Special CV-19 Update from Fredericton - 23 new cases today. Largest single day since pandemic started - 71 people affected and one in the hospital. - infections we see today are a result of contraction a few weeks ago.... - stay at home as much as possible. - not the time for house parties - very bad idea. - some people still don’t get how serious the situation is - outbreak in zone 5 took four weeks to get under control - make a contingency plan now just in case - the virus doubles every 24 hours so it can go up very quickly - zones one and two are in Orange but rest of province is close to going the same way. - Premier - ‘Please don’t give up now. It pains me to lose our gains so close to the end. The threat is real and the entire province could go to Orange.’ - SJ (zone two) is close to slipping into the red zone. - Question: Why can weddings/funerals etc take place? A: we’ve examined the data and consider the risks compared to the detriments to mental health and delayed in surgeries and things like that. It is a balance. We keep looking at the data and revise as we know more. We are getting better and better at responding to each outbreak. In the very beginning we had a blanket approach but now that we know more we want to be much more targeted. See more

This afternoon hundreds of students at Mount Allison University in Sackville protested the lack of help against sexual assault on the campus. Normally seen as the 'best in the country' many students make claims of being 'gaslit' by the university and made to feel it was their fault they were assaulted while at the same time protecting the perpatrators. We take you to the protest and speak with those involved and one brave young woman from PEI. Note: shortly after the protest was over the university president released a statement with immediate action items to help. Whether these will have the effect only time (and protesters) will tell.

FROM GNB LIVE STREAM: ZONE TWO (SJ) back to orange. Cases have doubled in 48 hours. 7 new cases today in SJ. - Dr. Russell says to limit travel to both Orange zones... - Two new cases in zone one (Moncton) - All new cases being investigated - 51 active cases with one in hospital - 600 people in NB are self isolating - NB's numbers remain low but must not be complacent - limit contact to single family bubble (who you live with) - Single Family Bubble can be extended to caregivers or those who need care. - SFBubble relates to Orange Zones only - Have a contingency plan ready in case you need to self-isolate for two weeks. - YELLOW zones can have events limited to 20 people. - Spread is often through contact local gatherings. - Gyms and fitness centres can remain open with plans - Public transit can operate but passengers must wear mask and stay one metre apart. - Support local businesses as much as you can. - Limit your contact numbers as low as possible. - You can go to a restaurant in ORANGE phase but you can only sit with your single household bubble. - Both Dr. Russell and Premier would discourage people from going south. The link to that can be found here: https://www.townofriverview.ca/petitcodiaction Prior to that all of the details of the closure will discussed live on the Town's FB page on Oct.30th, at 12PM. An Update on COVID-19 by the Province of New Brunswick. - 1 COVID-19 case in Zone One and three in Zone Five. - A modified self isolation will be put into place for people travelling for work into and out of the province. - Dr. Russell says that it is a numbers game as to when we'll get more cases of CV-19 as the number of cases per day has gone from 361 per day in Canada to the current 2,700 per day. Hence we must take proactive measures. - This new modified isolation will ...allow business and work to continue but at the same time provide a higher level of protection. - Border guards have been moved from NS border to the one with Quebec and the State of Maine. - Halloween is a 'go' from the province's standpoint if you're in a yellow zone. Former Moncton mayor and Deputy Minister of Education Dennis Cochrane has remained silent on various issues over the years. But on the issue of locating the new Bessborough/Hillcrest school on the BMHS property he feels he must break his silence and speak out against it. There are a large number of parents who are upset by the location decision and the lack of transparency or consultation in the process. Cochrane agrees. He also feels the environmental aspect of this decision is being overlooked to the government’s detriment. At this time the province has yet to answer repeated requests as to why this location was chosen, what other locations were considered and how it was done. Our conversation with Dennis Cochrane.
