’Tis the season to plant your garlic! Growing garlic is dead easy and highly rewarding. Here are a few steps to get you started: - Always buy your seed garlic ...locally; garlic from the grocery store may carry disease and may be unsuitable for our climate. Many local producers have seed garlic still available at the Bulkley Valley Farmers' Market. - Separate the cloves (but don’t skin them!) and plant each one, pointed end up, 10-15cm (4-6) apart and with the tip of the clove 2-5cm (1-2) deep. - Especially in our climate, it is best to insulate your planted garlic with mulch to ensure proper overwintering. A message from our BVFM President: The Province issued a press release today that declared Farmers’ Markets an essential service. The Bulkley Valley Farmers’ Market is currently operating at our outdoor location (Main St. & Hwy 16) on Saturdays from 9-12. Here are some modifications we’ve made due to the COVID-19 pandemic: Only food vendors (farmers, bakers, food processors), vendors selling cleaning products, ready-to-eat-foods and liquor vendors are currently allowe...d to vend throughout the Province. (Note: Our market only has food vendors right now). The market has transitioned to a grab & go style no loitering will be permitted to respect the social distancing mandate issued by the Province. Vendors will be using gloves and hand sanitizer, sanitizing high contact surfaces on a regular basis, we have a hand wash station set up as well. We are encouraging people to pre-order product as much as possible for faster pick-up and less interaction. Vendors will be spaced at least 2m apart. Please respect the 2m social distancing guideline if you have to line up. Please listen to the Market Manager. She is tasked with making sure that people keep moving through the market to help with social distancing. It is still acceptable to use cash (this is a directive from the BCAFM) but if you can use a credit or debit card, please do so. It’s important to note that for now, the Bulkley Valley Farmers’ Market is NOT a social event we have transitioned to a DIRECT FOOD MARKET. We are all looking forward to the time when we can go back to having music (and washrooms!) but for now, please understand that the market is only able to operate safely if you just come, pick up your shopping and then leave. Many thanks for your understanding and for supporting the Bulkley Valley Farmers’ Market vendors!

There are few more poignant symbols of hope than a freshly sprouted seedling in the springtime. We appreciate that everyone has a lot on their minds right now,... and your fresh food supply is likely supplanted by more immediate and worrying concerns, but we just want you to rest assured that farmers are hard at it, planting the promise of future harvests in what we hope will be a return to better times. Like most things right now, there is a lot of uncertainty about how markets will function this season. We firmly believe that access to fresh healthy food is an essential necessity, and we will get it to you safely. We are working on our contingency planning around the markets, and have expanded our newly minted CSA weekly share program to include a Smithers delivery as well as Hazelton. You can sign up now at woodgrain.ca/csa to ensure your veggie supply for the season, or if you already have too much on your plate right now just stay tuned and we’ll update soon on other delivery or pickup options.
