Uncommon opinion: encouragement is an important part of editing. Editing is about helping you make the strongest piece of writing you possibly can. An important part of that is noticing, appreciating, and making the most of what's already working. That helps build trust between editor and writer, too, which brings me to another underappreciated fact... Editing is teamwork. More on that tomorrow!
