Are you a parent with a teen who would love to take yoga classes? The day you’ve been waiting for is finally here. We now offer yoga classes designed exclusively for your pre teen and teen 12 years and older. Our resident yoga instructor Kim John has been teaching yoga to kids and teens for many years and we are super excited to bring her wonderful energy to our studio in Navan! Check out our 3-week introduction to yoga: tween and teen series starting in November!... Every class will feature active yoga sequences, designed to develop strength, flexibility and self-confidence. The classes will also focus on breath, fun chanting, hand mudras as well as mindfulness and a short meditation exercise. All classes are age-appropriate and no prior yoga experience is required. Child’s Pose (Balasana) is one of my all time favorites! It is often performed to rest in between more difficult poses. How To: Begin on all 4s in tabletop position. Walk your palms a little forwards on your mat.... Press into your palms and widen your knees to the outer edges of your mat while keeping your big toes touching. Inhale look forward Exhale and sit back on your heels. Lay your torso down between your thighs. Extend your arms in front of you with palms facing down. Let your upper back broaden, soften and relax your lower back. Keep your gaze drawn inward with your eyes closed. Child’s pose is a resting pose. Stay anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes while engaging in long, soft breaths. Modifications: Arms extended or arms tucked behind Knees apart. Knees together If you have difficulty resting your buttocks on your heels, place a folded towel between the back of your thighs and your calves. Benefits: Helps to stretch the hips, thighs, and lower back. Reduces stress and anxiety. Lengthens and stretches the spine. Cautions: Current or acute knee injury. With pregnancy: practice a wide-legged variation of the pose. Do not press the belly on top of the thighs. Add a bolster or pillow under your forehead as needed. A good friend of mine recently posted this article on her Facebook page and I thought it was worth sharing. Anyone else feeling a rest deficit? As mothers, wives, caregivers, multi-taskers, it is easy to shove aside our feelings of fatigue...but in the end we need to focus on getting the RIGHT TYPE OF REST and spoiler alert... extra sleep is not always the solution!

When Kim isn’t teaching or practicing tai chi, qigong, yoga she loves to mountain bike and road riding with her buddies in the Gatineau’s and at LAROSE Forest. Kim’s favorite reality shows to watch are, Survivor and The Bachelorette/Bachelor. Kim is a devoted animal lover. She has 2 cats, a dog, and 4 chickens amongst all the birds she feeds outside every day, rain or shine, sleet... or snow. We would like to get to know you better. What is a fun fact about you?

Supported Fish Pose The supported fish pose is a favourite among students; a much needed release for computer-weary necks and shoulders. Supported Matsyasana expands the chest and can relieve neck, shoulder and abdominal tension. It allows for deeper breathing. It is alleged to stimulate abdominal organs, reduce anxiety and depression, increase metabolism and improve posture. How to:... Place a yoga bolster lengthwise behind your back, keeping the bolster close to but not touching your sacrum. Your spine should be parallel to, and your head fully supported by the bolster as you slowly lay back. Legs can be straight, or knees can be bent. Bring the soles of your feet together and let your knees fall open. Lay your arms out on each side in a relaxed T position; palms up for a totally receptive posture. Focus on let go breathing: Inhale soothing energy with a mental let OR Exhale tension with a mental ‘go’ Stay for 3-5 minutes To come out of Supported Matsyasana, roll gently off your bolster, onto your side. Take a few breaths on your side before pushing yourself up to sitting. In general the pose is most comfortable when your chin is even with or slightly lower than your forehead. If your head is tilting back, this pose will get uncomfortable fairly quickly. You can remedy this by placing a folded blanket under your head and neck. This pose should be comfortable. Cautions: If you find the stretch to be too intense, place a pillow under each arm for additional support Avoid this pose if you have high blood pressure, migraines or back problems Always work within your own range of limits and abilities. If you have any medical concerns, talk with your doctor before practicing yoga.
