Folks today is Day 1 of #scholarstrikecanada, "We affirm protestors, workers for social justice, and activists who are crucial to making our communities safer and better. State-sanctioned violence is part of the systemic violence that materially disenfranchises Black, Indigenous and racialized people, and is a contemporary function of slavery, carcerality and colonialism in the world today. In the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the conditions that allow s...ystemic and material violence to disproportionately affect Black persons and communities have been exacerbated." CW: This article includes discussions of intimate partner violence, sexual harassment, sexual abuse, and rape. "According to the Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres, since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the provinces sexual violence hotlines have seen an increase in phone calls and there has been a rise in intimate partner violence, as well as concerns regarding access to services such as shelters and survivor supports. Public health crises, such as COVID-19, h...ighlight and exacerbate existing inequities along the intersections of race, Indigeneity, gender, sexuality, gender identity, class, and ability. Communities that are already vulnerable due to structural inequities are more likely to become sick and die from COVID-19, and it is these communities that also experience the greatest negative impacts of related consequences, like loss of income and violence. These differential impacts are a result of systemic racism, ageism, classism, ableism, sexism, and heterosexism. The intensification of intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and stalking; police violence against Black communities; an increase in anti-Asian racism; the largest mass shooting in Canadian history; and the horrendous conditions in long-term care facilities for the aging are all symptoms of systems that are deeply inequitable. While discussing all of these connections is outside of the scope of this article, we encourage faculty, staff, and administrators within postsecondary institutions to take this broader context into account as courses and programming are shifted to remote modes of delivery." https://academicmatters.ca/remote-teaching-and-technology-/

We hope our community will add their voices and amplify this petition by sharing it within their networks: Appeal the Decision! I am urging the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney-General to appeal an Ontario Court of Appeal decision that makes voluntary intoxication a legitimate defense in sexual assault and violent crime cases. It is already incredibly difficult for survivors of sexual assault to come forward, and to get the justice they deserve for the heinous crimes commit...ted against them, anything that makes it even more difficult for survivors of sexual assault and violent crimes to get that justice is a painful step backwards. Then Ontario Court of Appeal decision flies in the face of some of the progress made by the #MeToo movement. I am strongly urging an appeal, so a higher court can weigh the impact this decision may have on the lives of women, trans women and sex workers, their bodies, and the justice they deserve after surviving sexual assault or violence. Please add your name below to show your support! Sign here: https://www.jillandrewmpp.ca/appeal-the-decision

Preventing sexual violence is EVERYONES responsibility! We know that most men are not comfortable with derogatory comments, nor engage in coercive and sexually inappropriate behavior. This means that the majority of men on our campus have an important role to play in challenging and intervening as prosocial bystanders to prevent sexual violence. Unquestionably men are instrumental to the success of our efforts to prevent sexual violence. We are grateful to all the outstanding UWindsor men that step up and get involved in our campus-wide initiative.
