As much as we all do not want to believe it, the majority of the sexual abuse cases in Kelowna were committed by a person who knew the child. This is why it is sooo important to talk to your children. They need to understand what is okay and what is not, and you need to be asking them questions about what happened and what was said during their time spent away with you. This will help you to pick up on clues as to who in your life may have the ill intentions we dread so muc...h. This is difficult and unimaginable for most of us, but it is happening in OUR community. Children are innocent, and it is up to the village to support and protect them. We have to give a big shout out to Cassidy Wallis for doing all of this research. We know that it was not easy to sift through the dozens of cases of child sexual abuse and we are so grateful that you are able to provide these statistics to help us create the awareness we very much need. From floor to ceiling, our centre is designed to help children and youth feel as comfortable as possible during some of the most challenging times in their lives. This is the mural inside the youth medical examination room. It may seem like a simple thing, but having something colourful to look at while having a medical exam helps comfort them greatly. The alternative is a scary room with big fluorescent lights and white walls, the opposite of comforting. Catering to the kids that need to be here in every way possible is key. These numbers are going to be difficult to read, but we ask that you read them because this is a very important awareness to have as a parent that wants the best for their children. These statistics are part of the research conducted by Cassidy Wallis in partnership with Dr Woodworth, The RCMP, and us here at the #CACkelowna on cases that happened right here in Kelowna, BC. Almost 1/2 of the sexual abuse done to children ages 1 to 3 was severe.... 48% of offenders were related to the victims. Only 8% of cases were committed by strangers. 91% of the offenders knew the victim. 80% of caregivers who abused the child did so multiple times. 60% of caregivers who abused the child did so 10 or more times. It is heart wrenching to know that people these children should have been able to trust to keep them safe were the ones harming them. Once again we would like to remind you of the warning signs of sexual abuse in children. Please make sure you save this post and share it with those that you know. Together we can help bring these numbers down and create a better future for our children. Trouble walking or sitting. Displays knowledge of sexual acts inappropriate for their age, or even seductive behaviour. Makes strong efforts to avoid a specific person, without an obvious reason. Doesn’t want to change clothes in front of others or participate in physical activities. An STD or pregnancy, especially under the age of 14 Runs away from home. #LetsTalkAboutAllOfIt
