OUTBREAK AT THE TORONTO SOUTH DETENTION CENTRE USE THIS TOOL TO DEMAND ACTION www.torontoprisonersrightsproject.org/take-action-outbreak- There is a COVID-19... outbreak at the Toronto South Detention Centre. On December 11, the Ministry of the Solicitor General reported 25 new active cases. A dramatic increase from the reports of 7 the day before. Frontline workers and loved ones of those insides have signalled that the outbreak may even be more dire than what has been reported suggesting that there may be as many as 100 active cases. At the onset of the pandemic, prisoners and their families, alongside community and legal organizations, sounded the alarm about the risk this pandemic poses for incarcerated people. The groundswell of advocacy led to an unprecedented depopulation of provincial prisons across Ontario. Since then, the number of people in prisons and jails has started to increase, despite the reality that we are still amid a pandemic. As the pandemic spreads throughout prisons and jails across the country, we are reminded that our governments are not concerned about the lives of the people inside. It is always up to our communities of conscience to demand action and ensure that prisoner demands are being met.

A big thank you to Women and Gender Equality Canada and Maryam Monsef for providing emergency COVID-19 funding relief to all Elizabeth Fry Societies who applied. Our local member societies are continuing to provide critical front-line support to our communities, but that can't happen without these necessary resources!

Because it bears repeating. Still, until. Unlike dust, let us settle into a leaning position to keep these tectonic shifts sliding.
