This year, the CCDA has enjoyed an abundant harvest of Cafe Justicia. Members have brought in so many premium, strictly hard beans that the CCDA has had to lease drying patios from neighbours to be able to process them all.
Peace Brigades plays an important role in dissuading attacks against human rights and land defenders, They're currently seeking volunteers to accompany threatened activists in Guatemala and Honduras. https://pbicanada.org//pbi-honduras-pbi-guatemala-now-see/
A great shot of the CCDA’s coffee mill with this year’s harvest of Cafe Justicia laid out on the drying patios and the cherry pulp ready to be turned into organic fertilizer.
BC CASA-Cafe Justicia Canada wishes the CCDA, producers of Cafe Justicia a happy 39th anniversary and the best of luck with their multi-site national assembly today. 39 years of struggle, and 39 years of advances for Mayan farmers in Guatemala.
Sister Ortiz’s brave testimony and persistence helped reveal the role of US advisors to a Guatemala military committing war crimes well into the later years of the armed conflict.
We are very sorry to hear of the loss today of long time Guatemala solidarity activist Julio Ceren. Julio was involved in many struggles for rights and social Justice, but we knew him best for his solidarity with the Campesino Committee of the Highlands (CCDA). He distributed Cafe Justicia to many communities in southern Ontario, first through his own company, Maya Coffee, and later with the Todos por Guatemala Network. Julio also hosted CCDA representatives on several occasions. Un luchador hasta el fin, Julio will be sorely missed. BC CASA/Cafe Justicia extends our condolences to his family. HASTA SIEMPRE COMPAÑERO!

Important update on case of 36 Maya Achi women for sexual violence that occurred during the internal armed conflict. https://www.breakingthesilenceblog.com//weaving-justice-u/
Like many Canadian solidarity organizations and NGOs, BC CASA-Cafe Justicia has supported efforts by Kekchi women who suffered sexual violence at the hands of the security forces of a Canadian mining company to seek justice, both in Guatemala and Canada. This investigation by The Intercept reveals the extent to which the Canadian Corporation, Hudbay Resources with the tacit support of the Canadian embassy in Guatemala, employed the Guatemalan state to carry out its aim to clear the lands it sought to mine of their indigenous inhabitants. https://theintercept.com//hudbay-skye-canada-mining-guate/
BC CASA/Cafe Justicia Canada this year is cooperating with CUPE and the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) to support a project on "Agrarian Justice" with the CCDA, producers of Cafe Justicia coffee. These photos are from an Agrarian Justice assembly in the CCDA Community of El Esfuerzo, where last summer a BC CASA youth brigade built an elementary school. Thank you to Cafe Justicia drinkers and roasters who made possible our contributions to these important porjects.
For the past 12 years, BC CASA/Cafe Justicia has dedicated a small amount of our profits (about $4,000 per year) from the sale of Cafe Justicia to Artesana, an organization in Guatemala that assists imprisoned women and their families. We congratulate Artesana on their 14th anniversary and thank Cafe Justicia drinkers and green bean customers who make it possible for us to support Artesana's important work.
Ironically, this is the same president who, only a few weeks ago, said that he was done eith Covid prevention measures and that every Guatemalan should take care of their own health and safety.
BC CASA, importers and distributors of Cafe Justicia in Canada, was originally created in response to an appeal in 1989 from leaders of Guatemala's National Association of University Students (AEU) for support after many of them received death threats. Before we could send a delegation down to help accompany the students, many of them had been forcibly disappeared. For many year's afterwards, BC CASA's focus involved pressuring Guatemalan authorities to investigate the abduction of the student leaders. To this day, the crime has not been resolved. For those who understand Spanish, this video form the Myrna Mack Foundation provides a good overview of the unresolved case of the disappeared students of '89.
This piece, accompanied with powerful photos by James Rodriguez, provides a useful analysis of the growing role of climate change in forcing Guatemalans and other Central Americans to migrate North.
An interesting piece on the great risks faced by environmentalists and land defenders in Guatemala, and the work of Peace Brigades in providing them with accompaniment. https://pbicanada.org//pbi-guatemala-accompaniment-4th-mo/
CCDA’s 2019-20 crop of Cafe Justicia has been processed and is on its way to the exporter for shipment to Canada.
An excellent conversation with Campesino Committee of the Highlands' (CCDA) Cafe Justicia reps Wilson Tzunun and Neydi Morales about the production of Cafe Justicia's hihg quality, solidarity trade roganic ocffee and the impact of the pandemic on coffee producing communities affiliated with the CCDA in Guatemala. The first seven minutes are spent sorting out translation and connections issues of participants, so scroll ahead to Minute 7, when the formal introduction begins.
Long-time Guatemala solidarity activist Cara Lee will make and send you a mask in return for a donation to Rights Action, an organization that does excellent work in support of communities in Honduras and Guatemala
