Restoration Reflection - Story of the Cafe Door .. The transformation of the Armoury into a Cafe has been quite a journey. The building has revealed so many cool features. The Cafe door is one of those. Tony Hale Custom Designs and Creations is the driving force leading the re-purposing. He is the "building whisperer". The building talks to him. He listens and then carefully and thoughtfully considers purpose and aesthetics and finally moves forward with meticulous attention... to detail and form (Tony’s work emulates those two words: carefully and thoughtfully). What exists behind the plaster? Removal of the heavy plaster wall against the brick in the Armoury in 2016 revealed the original brick door header, likely from when the building was first constructed in 1912. We knew more significant access was required for the Cafe. And we had found it. Together Tony, Steve Hale and I removed 4 layers of brick that filled the original door frame. 40 buckets of brick later and the opening was revealed. The pre-existing brick framing avoided an engineering challenge and expense and provided an eye pleasing archway in which the new door was installed. Can you meet code and maintain and add to the striking character of The Old Post? We quickly learned (thank you Terry Kuipers) what was required to meet current building code! Subsequently, there are two layers of wool insulation and 2 separate drywall surfaces sandwiched between stain glass on both sides. It was really cool how we were able to meet code and maintain the feel and the beauty of the original 1912 structure. The door is taken from an old school building. End result .. Tony completed the stained glass and added lights to make the glass pop and giving the illusion of natural light. His stained glass work is evident throughout the building along with the unique building style that ties the Old Post together. Next time .. Next time when you pass through the doorway, consider the detail and thought put into its construction. It is never just another build out at The Old Post.
