Available soon at the store! Another 11x14 ambrotype on clear glass test. Worked pretty good, I think. I need to do a better job cleaning the glass- I think that’s the culprit for some white marks on the image. Thanks @jonathandanyliw for stopping by and having seat. . .... . Big news!!!! We’re moving to where all the cool kids are - were relocating to Kathleen Street! Yup, that’s right just doors down from @tucostacolounge , @beardsbakery , @cosmicdavesvinyl Right next door to Escape Artists. While I’m sad to leave the beautiful space on Elm Street (it’s going to live on as a beautiful restaurant), I will be transforming Café Obscura into a full time film photography store, a working tintype and film portrait studio by @davidwiewel The most e...xciting part of this relocation will be the creation of @darkroomobscura , a 24 hour access black and white darkroom, complete with wet printing and scanning capabilities. I’m looking forward to welcoming the @sudburyphotographycollective into the fold and to provide space and access for all your darkroom needs. All of this will allow me to concentrate on shooting more, printing more and mentoring more. I couldn’t be more excited. I’m hoping to be open at the new location early March. There will be bumps along the road and developing my take a bit longer than usual while I renovate and move. Please be patient with me. 2021 is going to awesome!

Hoboes, California, 1975. I was hired in 1975 by the California Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) to travel the roads of California for 4 months to make a p...hotographic documentation about poverty in this state at that time. During this period, I was all over the state, driving my Volkswagen, and sleeping in flea bag hotels and eating diner food, and photographing. Among the many people I met, I rode the trains with men called "Hoboes", who were homeless and road trains, hiding and sleeping in boxcars-eternal nomads, that would find occasional day jobs to help keep themselves fed. This body of work, some of which was exhibited and published at the time, has rarely been seen, and never been published in book form. It is among the work I have done in my lifetime I am most proud of, and there is a real "Grapes of Wrath" quality about these photographs that now, 45 years later, already represent a period in our collective history. I showed these photographs to W. Eugene Smith at John Morris' New York apartment over a dinner in late August of 1975, and he took me aside and leaned over and whispered in my ear, "Peter, you have a good heart, and very good eyes-you can do this-no one well ever hold your hand-but I encourage you to follow your heart, and do this". Following that conversation I dropped out of college for a year and moved to Paris that fall, and studied French at the Sorbonne and completed a reportage on the old cafés of Le Marais District of Paris for a period of 8 months, before returning to finish my undergraduate degree at the U. of Michigan with a degree in French Literature. I then worked a year building concrete highways in Indiana to save money and moved back to live in Paris for good, in 1978. During those 4 months in California in 1975 I learned much about the fragility of life. I also learned a lot about the haves and have nots of our world. And, there had never been a question for me-my heart finds itself always more preoccupied about people that have too little, rather than about those that have too much. I will eventually publish a new book, "The Unseen California", and look forward in the future to these photographs being known by the world. Peter Turnley, somewhere in Central California, 1975.
