A team of researchers at the University of Waterloo developed a palm-sized device that uses radar and artificial intelligence (AI) to non-invasively read blood inside the human body. This new technology will be able to quickly and accurately monitor glucose levels in people with diabetes without the need to prick your finger to draw blood. Researchers are now exploring commercialization of this technology; they estimate the device would retail for less than $500. The project was led by Ala Eldin Omer an engineering PhD student at Waterloo. Learn more about how this device works and what are its potential applications: https://bit.ly/2TpfNdI

The University of Calgary is one of the few places in Canada with a Biosafety Level 3 Lab (BSL-3), this lab allows scientists and clinicians to further their research into vaccines and treatments for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. Researchers from the University will soon have access to a BSL-3 lab, this facility will also allow them to study the complete life cycle of the virus, starting at the point of infection. The BSL-3 labs are built with a separate heating and ventilation system to ensure pathogens can never escape. Learn more about all the type of research that can be done at a BSL-3 lab: https://bit.ly/38jxJPB
