Cal for Council 2018

My name is Cal Crawford and I am running for the position of Councillor in the October 20, 2018 Municipal Election. I have noticed people on Facebook mention that they don’t know anything about the candidates in the upcoming election. I would like to take a few minutes of your time and tell you about me. My wife {Sharon} and I have lived in Mission for the past 30 years. We have 2 adult children and 3 adult grandchildren. I started my working career as a grocery clerk and aft...er 2 years I apprenticed as an electrician. I received my red seal journeyman ticket as an electrician and worked in that job for 13 years. I then decided to pursue a career in real estate and obtained my real estate license. I upgrade my license to a Broker’s License and spent a total of 37 years as a professional realtor. I have extensive experience in ownership, management, training and sales during those years. I retired from real estate approximately 2.5 years ago. During my working life I have always been involved with community groups and organizations. The involvement has varied and represents a wide spectrum of community interests. I have received two very highly regarded honors for my community involvement. The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Freeman of the City Award from the District of Mission. I am currently serving as Chair of the Mission Hospice Society, Director of Mission Senior Centre Association, Director of Mission Community Services Society and a founding and active member of the Mission Mid-Day Rotary Club. My hobbies are reading, woodworking, motorcycle riding and fishing. In case you didn't have the opportunity to attend the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce All Candidates Forum on Wednesday night, I have enclosed my platform speech from that event. Thank you for your time. Cal Crawford - Candidate for Councillor Ladies and Gentlemen, I believe that Mission has arrived at a juncture where it is vitally important that we grab the opportunity to shape the future of our community and it involves more than planning. We need to develop an all in...clusive long term vision for our community. A vision that is built by the Citizen’s, Community Groups, Business’s, Municipal Administration and Council. A vision that we can all buy into and a vision that will reconnect us as a community and make us proud about moving forward together. To define the future of Mission, a vision must come before the planning. We need to know what we want to be before we can plan how to get there. In the recent past different neighborhoods of Mission have seen and experienced the emotional frustration of living in a community that is moving ahead under a reactive process. It’s time we stop presenting these highly frustrating and reactive new developments that are taking place in Mission and create a unified and all inclusive long term vision so that we can all move forward knowing that our new developments will fit with neighboring subdivisions and portray the integrity of our community. Good results are the reward for a well thought out vision that is properly directed and with leadership that is empowered to allow the implementation of the vision. Combined with building on the Official Community Plan, we can embark on an exciting and rewarding path for Mission’s future. Mission has always been a great place to live and raise a family and I would like to be part of the process to ensure that we can continue to offer a desirable and quality way of life to anyone who wishes to reside in our community.
