Calgary Bird School 19.03.2021

Some days I feel a large hole in my heart. I want to help more birds. One day I want to have a large house and lots of time so I can adopt my dream bird, a Blue&Gold Macaw. Until that day, I choose to support a bird who is in need. Meet Zoey, a b&g at GreyHaven. We virtually "adopt" him and our funds go to his care and to buy him a large toy every month. Thank you @greyhaven_birds for allowing us to redirect our love of parrots towards a guy who needs some love. We are so happy Zoey can benefit from sponsorship. And someday, when the timing is right, we will adopt a b&g in need. Until then, enjoy monthly updates from Zoey! #adoptdontshop #calgarybirdschool #positivereinforcement #rightplacerighttime #myhouseisfull #butmyheartneededmore #sponsorarescue

In everything we say (or type) our thoughts need to pass through three gates: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Then we can respond. We deserve the same compassion towards each other as we give to our birds.

Galvanized wire is safe to use to build your aviary. Buy the good stuff though, it's GAW and will last a long time.

Training Tidbit: heads and shoulders are OK! Contrary to internet folklore, your bird is not "dominant" for perching on your head or shoulder. Birds do, however, find safety in perches up high. Are you having trouble removing your bird from your head? It may be seen as a preferred spot Let's change the dialogue. We can HELP our bird with extra step up practice with YUMMY reinforcement And keep the function of the behaviour strong with consent ... Your bird isn't GIVING you a hard time, they are HAVING a hard time. Let's communicate, teach, and help. Want to know more? Send us a DM! #calgarybirdschool #positivereinforcementtraining #positivereinforcement #lima #communication #cockatielsofig #downwithdominancelables

In spring, you can cut apple branches for your birds. Or, if you live far enough south that tree trimming happens right now, you can give the (untreated) branches to your birds! Mmmmm

In the depths of a Canadian winter, it's nice to be able to offer some life greenery to the birds. Here is the Catit cat grass setup, which keeps the growing medium safely away from the birds. The cockatiels love being able to chew on greens!

Some great training here. Watch the video twice - once without sound, then with sound. What do you think Gromet is learning? What do you think is being reinforced? What do you think the umans is trying to reinforce?

Beak growing too long? Why not teach your bird to rub it himself? Pediperches are a great use for this trained behaviour.

Today we had the pleasure of hosting a Bird Day for this amazing young man. It's his birthday! He loves parrots, and he also knows they are a huge commitment. So we gave him the experience of a lifetime with 4 CAGs, two tiels, an amazon and a Pionus. We love helping people experience the joys of parrots, and also love to share the knowledge of proper parrot keeping. Happiest of Birthdays To You! #calgarybirdschool #happybirthday #parrotday #parrotparty #HappyBirdDay #educate #spreadthelove #positivereinforcement #positivereinforcementtraining #iaabcpetsbehavingwell #enrichmentforall
