Calgary Business Podcast travelled to the offices of Vivametrica to meet Dr. Richard Hu, the CEO and co-founder, on 26 November 2019. It was snowing on that day (much like yesterday!) and the first thing I noticed in the boardroom was the whiteboard with flowcharts and tech terminology like API and UI/UX. Richard (call me Rick) assured me that this was not put up on my behalf. . . Why is an orthopaedic surgeon and former head of the Spine Program at the University of Ca...lgary and former Chief of Surgery at the Foothills Hospital working with technology, FItBit tracking devices, insurance companies and wellness facilities? Rick and his co-founders, Dr Christy Lane of Mount Royal University and Matthew Smuck from Stanford University, wanted another means of tracking patient recovery, getting closer to their treatment and using data to improve patient health. . Fast forward to 4 August 2020; I understand that congratulations are in order for Richard and his team. Vivametrica was acquired by Sprout At Work, a Toronto-based global enablement solution for workplace wellbeing. This is the first post-podcast M&A deal. Vivametrica, is a health analytics company focused on predictive tools for insurers and wellness program providers. It is my view that Vivametrica has the potential to be the next Benevity or MobSquad Cafe to raise serious VC / PE fu...nds for a Calgary-based tech-enabled startup. There is no surprise that Rick Hu is also an advisor and part of the founding team at Ammolite BioModels. I learned this later when I interviewed the CEO, Aubrey Blair-Pattison . It is no wonder Avenue Magazine Calgary featured VivaMetrica co-founder, Dr. Christy Lane in the Top 40 under 40 in 2018 . In my view, startups like Vivametrica and Ammolite BioModels, are the exact initiatives that the City of Calgary Your Local Government and Calgary Economic Development should consider seeking to draw inspiration and ideas from when they formulate strategy for re-starting businesses and entrepreneur programs in the post #Covid19 period. . . When I met with Brad back in November last year, prolonged oil prices had a profound impact on the nature and type of insurance coverage his oil and gas clients sought to put in place -- or not. We talked about what i...t means to self-insure as a means for oil companies to manage risks associated with their local and international activities. Self-insuring means, among many factors, having to cover the relevant costs connected to potential claims such as a well blow-out, pipeline spill or gas leakage in a refinery or processing facility. . . The recent perfect storm of capital markets decline, compressed consumer demand and lower oil prices, exacerbates the problem. Cash management will certainly be one key element for energy companies in the weeks and months to come not the least of which will be to effectively manage the risks, and related costs, associated with its operating activities. . .
