This is a relatively basic 2nd story pressure treated deck built as an addition to a very small existing corner deck that came with this house but provided very little usable space and no egress to the back yard. For this particular project the sloping grade change over the course of the yard makes one side of the deck quite a bit higher off the ground than the other side. The staircase into the back yard needed 13 steps, even being on the side closest to the ground. The d...eck is built on a foundation of four concrete piers (12 inch diameter) that are buried at least four feet deep to prevent any movement with freeze and thaw cycles. The posts are 6 x 6 pressure treated timbers anchored to the concrete piers with galvanized steel brackets. The posts are supporting a beam constructed from three layers of treated 2 x 10 lumber glued and screwed together in an overlapping manner. The building code only calls for a two ply beam at a minimum but we build all decks with a three ply beam for good measure. See more
