Thank you Calgary City Council for the opportunity to speak during the public submissions today. As the city continues to grow bigger and bigger, the fire department continues to get spread thinner and thinner. We are simply asking for the tools to do our job. Please keep the safety of Calgarians and your firefighters in mind as you make decisions on next years budget. #yyccc #yyc

Happy #FireFighterFriday! This week, we’re again highlighting Calgary Firefighters who served with the Canadian Armed Forces. We want to take the time to acknowledge the service and sacrifice of the Veterans and the current service members of Canada's Armed Forces. Today we’re so excited to introduce you to another one of our 1,400 members. Meet Darryl Watts! Darryl was born and raised in Calgary, a third generation Calgarian. He attended Forest Lawn High School, Mount Royal... College and the University of Calgary. He enrolled in the Army Reserves in High School, joining The King’s Own Calgary Regiment and greatly preferred the experience of the military over attending classes. He continued his Army Reserve service through his post secondary years. Initially discouraged from applying for the Fire Department just after high school due to a perceived lack of broad experience, the fire service kept calling him despite other schooling and employment. After working in heavy industry and business administration, he was successful in his application to the Fire Department and joined in 2001. The variety of the calls we attend and the significant impact we can have on the citizens we serve when life is often at its worst make this a very rewarding career, he says. In 2009 he took a leave of absence and deployed to Afghanistan as a Platoon Commander providing security for the Provincial Reconstruction Team. This allowed him to travel throughout Kandahar Province and see first hand how the Canadian efforts of the time were improving the life of the Afghan people. After his return home he continued in the Army Reserves and is now the Commanding Officer of his regiment. He has enjoyed the varied experiences available to members of the Fire Department, serving as a Boat Lieutenant in the Aquatics Team and with the Calgary Emergency Management Agency. He is currently a Captain at 36 Station in Hidden Valley. He is also a member of the Calgary Fire Department Honour Guard, currently serving as the Guard Commander. When he’s not working he enjoys travelling; time in the Caribbean to SCUBA dive with his wife, Carrie, and his adult children and camping in the mountains with the family two favourites. Darryl has been married for twenty five years. He has two children who are both attending the University of Calgary. We’re so happy to introduce you to Darryl, and happy he’s a part of our fire family. Check back every Friday to meet a new Calgary firefighter!

Yesterday, a mom and her children were displaced after a house fire. The fire started when a candle was knocked over in a bedroom. A quick-thinking teen in the home helped contain the fire to the bedroom by closing the door after he spotted the flames. https://globalnews.ca//calgary-dover-house-fire-nov-19-20/

Today, as Canadians honour the contributions of our veterans, we remember the Calgary Firefighters who sacrificed their lives in service to our country. When Canada sent forces into battle during World War 1, 61 of 94 members from the Calgary Fire Department answered the call to arms. Most deployed with three medical units in France: The 8th Canadian Field Ambulance; No.2 Casualty Clearing Station, and No. 7 Cavalry Field Ambulance. Before these firefighters left to go overs...eas, the leadership of the Calgary Fire Department signed and presented them with four flags, which they took to the front lines. Two of the flags were returned and are in the collection of the Firefighters Museum of Calgary. Four Calgary firefighters were killed in action during World War I. ERIC FRANK BURTON, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Lance Corporal Burton died of wounds at 82nd Field Ambulance on May 9, 1915 at the age of 23. One of the ‘Originals’ with PPCLI, Burton was fatally wounded at The Battle of Frezenburg. He is buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Belgium. WALTER GEORGE BARTLETT, 1st Mechanical Transport, Canadian Army Service Corps Private Bartlett died of wounds at No. 11 General Hospital in France on May 14, 1915 at the age of 27. He is now buried at the Eastern Boulogne Cemetery in France. ARTHUR FRANCIS BOWDEN, 1st Canadian Pioneers Battalion Private Arthur Bowden died of wounds at No. 61 Field Ambulance on May 26, 1916 at the age of 30. He is now buried in the Ypres Reservoir Cemetery in Belgium. JOHN BROWN GALLACHER, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Acting Corporal Gallacher died in The Battle of Mount Sorrel on June 2, 1916 at the age of 25. During World War II, 30 CFD members enlisted between 1939 and 1944. #themoreyouknow These firefighters served in all branches of the Canadian Armed Forces, including the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Royal Canadian Navy, and the Canadian Army Service Corps.... In 1942, Britain was the target of mass German bombings. After a visit to the UK, Canada’s Prime Minister pledged to support the National Fire Service of Britain with a Corps of Canadian Firefighters. The Corps of Canadian Firefighters comprised 422 firefighters, from across Canada, including seven Calgary firefighters who volunteered to assist the National Fire Service in the defence of Britain between 1942 and 1944. All seven firefighters survived the war and returned to Calgary in 1945. Here is a list of Calgary Firefighters who served overseas during World War II McDougall J.R. McDougall D.J. Beland R.F.
