Grass trimmers - curved shaft vs straight shaft Curved shaft trimmers, are usually shorter in length, lighter in weight, hence easier to handle in tight spots. Less pricey, also less powerful as compared with the equivalent straight shaft. Taller individuals may have to bend over thus making it uncomfortable for extended use. Straight shaft trimmers, are longer and slightly heavier than the curved shaft, more expensive, more powerful and more durable. Easier to get under harder to reach areas like decks, trees, benches, shrubs. Preferred by professionals and taller individuals.

Reseeding your lawn If you have thin or bare spots on your lawn you may want to reseed the affected areas. Make sure to pick the right timing to reseed, ideal temperatures for grass seed to germinate is above 15C. Ensure to pick the specific seeds for the area: sun, sun&shade or shade. Loosen up the top soil by using a rake or till the top soil if you have a larger area you want to reseed. Use a drop spreader, broadcaster spreader or spread the seeds by hand, depending on how... large the area you look to reseed is. Use a hand rake to mix the seeds with the top soil, then apply starter fertilizer, rich in phosphorus which will help establish healthy roots. Apply a layer of up to 1/2" off peat moss on top, that will provide extra nutrients, also holds moisture and protects the exposed seeds from being picked by birds. Seed germination could take anywhere from 5-14 days. Water twice daily and keep the soil moist until grass gets to 1.5" - 2" in height, then once a day after that. Cut after the new grass gets to 3.5" to 4" in height and make sure not to set you mower lower than 3" See more

Benefits of raised bed gardening Use untreated lumber to build your raised beds pine, fir, larch, cedar as chemicals used to treat wood might leach into the soil. Make them 4 feet wide or less, so they are easier to work on without having to kneel or stand on the soil. Also, the taller they are the less bending required. Raised bed gardening is more portable, you have more control over the location of the garden, is also more contained. Better soil, fill your raised bed ...garden with loose high-quality, nutrient-rich garden soil. Better drainage, excess water will be drained a lot better. Easier to work on, reduces back and knee pain while gardening as you don't have to bend over as far. Longer season, the soil warms up earlier in a raised bed, so you can plant earlier in Spring. A longer growing season is always welcome. Last but not least, they look neat and organized, you can make some pretty nice-looking gardens with a little bit of creativity. See more

Planting shrubs Best time to plant shrubs is early fall, or mid spring. Make sure to keep spacing in between, in accordance with the instructions. To plant the shrub, dig a hole about 2-2.5 times as wide as the diameter of the shrub's root ball. Do not dig too deep, top of the root ball should be leveled with ground. Mix the soil you dug out with tree potting soil, on a 2/3 - 1/3 ratio, place the shrub in the hole and fill back with the mixed soil. Water regularly for the first few weeks, make sure water gets to the roots. Place mulch on the surface around the shrub to keep soil moist and prevent weeds from germinating. Don't prune the shrubs until fully established

Lawn mowing 101 Proper mowing keeps the lawn green and healthy. Set you mower around 3" high, higher cuts lawn grasses are more stress tolerant, have a shading effect reducing germination of weed seeds and tend to keep moisture in the soil for longer. Mow more often, don't allow grass to grow past 4.5". Cut in different directions with each mowing. Avoid mowing wet grass, it's not safe, you get a poor cut quality and wet grass could clog up the mower's deck

How and when to water your lawn A regular lawn requires around 1" of water per week. If not sure how much you are watering, place a small tray in the sprinkler range and notice how much water accumulates in a timed period you run the sprinkler. Water early in the day and avoid midday or night watering, don't water when windy or in the heat of the day. Water infrequently, 2-3 times a week, thoroughly so moisture gets down to the depth of the roots. Test soil moisture with a moisture meter or use the "screwdriver test" where you deep a screwdriver into the lawn to a 6"-8" depth, if it penetrates relatively easy and you see wet dirt stuck to it after you take it out, then your soil is moist, if you have difficulties pushing it down past 2-3 inches, then your lawn needs water.
