I sent this to Minister Savage yesterday with cc's to Rachel Notley, my MLA Pon, Trudeau, Wilkinson. Dear Minister Savage, My concerns are many with your gover...nment’s determination to allow open pit coal mining. I don’t believe your assurances because clearing is happening in those areas as I write this. I am stymied by this government’s cooperation with Gina, the Australian billionaire. What are Alberta’s advantages? Jobs? Few and short term, Australia uses automation. Money? You sold for $30 something per hectare apparently. I could have paid that! Taxes? Not enough to warrant the devastation of areas that are home to wildlife, fish, clean air and clear pure water. Long term industry? No longer than 14-20 years and then what? Will they clean up afterward? So all the advantages are for Australia. Disadvantages would be poisoned water; there’s NO SOLUTION THAT CLEARS WATER OF SELENIUM; look in BC; destruction of wildlife habitat, water and scenery for which millions of tourists travel each year. You should invest in longer term, more viable and job-creating industries such as tourism and film. Your government is gaslighting Albertans into believing misinformation with a token but untrustworthy promise that no mountain tops would be sheared, but didn’t talk about projects unaffected by that promise, and already underway. Are you stacking the consultation committees? Where are you getting participants? I just heard about consultations in the fall of 2020. Who was invited? No public notice was released for awareness. Why so secretive? Articles are appearing about how coal is a dying proposition, as it should be, and how there are new innovations to make heat for steel making. At least one of the companies involved in your irresponsible decision has lost its underwriter, so I hope you didn’t buy their stock because it’s tanking. If you feel you will lose face or stop being the boss of everyone by reversing your ill thought-out decisions, your pride may destroy any chance of being forgiven by Albertans. Your government’s legacy of dishonesty, non-communication, arrogance and lack of empathy will be forever remembered. Search your conscience and stop assaulting the Rocky Mountains. Today's letter.... Dear Mr Kenny, I’m writing to you on World Water Day to ask you to please protect Alberta’s critical watersheds on the eastern slopes of the ...Canadian rockies. Not only does coal mining risk selenium contamination of waters that feed Alberta's agricultural industry, but water scarcity is going to become an increasing problem over the next 10 to 20 years and we can’t afford to divert significant quantities of water for new coal mining activities. Please considered the added threat of mining sites that are abandoned once the global demand for coal diminishes as the world transitions towards a low carbon future. The risk of water contamination from abandoned mines is even greater than a producing mine. There are numerous studies and reports on the impact of coal mining on the Elk River watershed. This should be a cautionary tale for Alberta. As public consultations begin later this month I hope you will listen to the anti-coal feedback that you are about to receive. The desire to protect our critical watersheds spans indigenous communities, ranchers, farmers, outdoor enthusiasts, UCP supporters in cities across Alberta, and of course environmentalists. This is more than an economic issue. It is a public health issue, a tourism issue, an indigenous affairs issue, an agriculture issue, and an election issue. An excellent short movie, The Present, has just been released on Netflix. It is directed by Palestinian-British filmmaker Farrah Nabulsi. It tells a very simp...le story of a West Bank Palestinian setting out with his daughter to buy his wife an anniversary gift. It shows all the trials, negotiation, and frankly, disrespectful treatment they endure as they cross into Israel. It is a reflection what so many Palestinians endure everyday. Excellent and Kudos to the Academy for their courage in nominating this movie for an Oscar. See more

#Canada needs a #COVID19 recovery plan that will propel us forward into a green recovery. We have the chance of a lifetime to launch a #climate strategy in lin...e with science and create opportunities for struggling industries and care for workers at the same time. It’s time for bold action, and we hope the Prime Minister will rise to the occasion. At 11am EST today Annamie Paul will be giving a press conference to talk about a green recovery. Stay tuned for more. #cdnpoli See more

Rather than divert into huffy admonishments or partisan sniping, Paul preached the importance of cross-party co-operation to develop solutions. Paul explained that this approach isn’t particularly revolutionary, but rather a tradition in times of crisis.
