If you have been thinking about improving your overall sound, getting rid of stage monitors, reducing the weight of your gear and evenly covering your audience from side-to-side and front-to-back, now is the time to act! Keep your mics and mixer, and just swap out your speakers for a vast improvement everyone will notice. Call me for an onsite demo. I'll show you some tips on how to optimize the sound to suit any sized room. Celtara in Edmonton did and they are able to reproduce the sound of their acoustic instruments more accurately than any other system. Contact them at celtara.com for their comments.

The Calgary Sound feature installation for the month of October is Restoration House Church in Calgary. Restoration House is affiliated with The Redeemed Christian Church of God, and holds its Sunday morning service at the Beth Shechinah Temple at 2635 32nd Street SW. Pastor Festus Fariyibi and his congregation were not satisfied with the existing house system at the Temple and required a sound system of their own that met four criteria: 1. The sound had to be of high quality... (particularly the voice); 2. The coverage had to be very even from side-to-side and from the front pew all the way to the back row; 3. The sound levels must be able to reach quite loud levels all the way to the back without damaging ears up front; and, 4. The system had to be very portable and easy to set up and take down. A single Bose L1 Model 1S fit the bill perfectly. An L1 Compact system was added to provide platform monitoring to the pastor and chorus. (Both speakers are marked in the photo because they are difficult to spot even though the room is filled with high energy sound.) Bose L1 portable line array systems are particularly effective outdoors because all the acoustic energy is radiated horizontally in a wedge-shaped pattern. Sound travels further and more evenly over distance and side-to-side than conventional horn-driven systems. Fully half of the energy from 'box enclosures on tripods' heads skywards and is wasted. Calgary Sound has worked closely with the Willow Park Charity Golf Classic over the past seven years. We salute the organizers and golfers who this year raised in excess of $550,000 and presented it to Calgary Meals On Wheels. Perhaps your outdoor event deserves the sound of Bose too.

Bose L1 Line Array systems were featured at the Canadian DJ Show held in Calgary this past weekend. Alan Smithson, the inventor of the high-tech glass panel Emulator DJ machine needed a full range system with lots of deep bass to demonstrate his unique machine. Calgary Sound provided a single Model II with B2 Bass Module and audiences loved the combination! Alan is shown on the right in this photo, with New York based Tommie Sunshine at the controls. We added an L1 Compact to the system to demonstrate that it's no slouch either when it comes to pumping out great sound at disk jockey volumes.

This month's cover page photo was taken at a memorial event at Bomber Command Museum in Nanton, Alberta. Over three hundred people attended this service and just a single Bose L1 Model II (just visible intersecting the left wing of the yellow Harvard Trainer behind the Lancaster FM159) was all that was required for everyone in the hangar to hear clearly. Bose Line Array technology is ideal where a wide dispersion angle is required and the radiation pattern to avoid sending energy into high ceiling spaces. The Bose L1 Model II is also in use at SAIT's Art Smith hangar at the Calgary International Airport. Contact Calgary Sound for an onsite demonstration to hear it for yourself. Send a message to Garry Hennan at [email protected].

Calgary Sound's Feature Installation of the Month for April is the Bomber Command Museum of Canada in Nanton, Alberta. Previously known as the Lancaster Air Museum, volunteers highlight the aircraft and heroes of World War II with tours of vintage planes and engine runs including an historic "Firing Up Four" event which took place outside the hangar last September. Bomber Command chose Calgary Sound to supply two Bose L1 Line Array portable speaker systems to cover the entire main hangar and smaller north hangar with highly intelligible sound for visitors and special events. I encourage you to visit the museum to come to a level of appreciation for the men and women who served in these aircraft and contributed to the freedom we take for granted in Canada. If the speakers in your sanctuary are high in the rafters like these, then we need to talk. Chances are very good that they produce a lot more reflections than the spoken word needs for a high degree of intelligibility. Calgary Sound will let you hear an A-B comparison of your system with Bose Line Array speakers at no obligation or expense to your church. Contact Garry at [email protected] to arrange a live demonstration for you and your congregation.

Deer Park United has a high ceiling sanctuary which is a virtual echo chamber. The choir and musicians sounded great but when it came time for announcements and the message, those voices were difficult to hear. The direct sound from their overhead cluster speakers was diminished and overcome by the reflected sound energy. Bose MA12 Line Arrays were positioned on either side of the chancel platform to direct their acoustic energy down onto the congregation only and avoids the empty space above. In addition, a single MA12 was positioned immediately behind the left stack to provide the choir with the best sound they have heard in years. For a reference comment on how much the sound has been improved using this technology, contact Pastor Tom Melvin at www.dpuc.ca or his office at 403-278-8263.
