Happy Mountain Monday Everyone! Have you wandered down to Alexander Falls and wonder... how in the heck does this monstrosity freeze? It is an amazing process that comes down to, you guessed it, WATER CRYSTALS. Can you tell we are nerding out on these a little bit? So we all know that the freezing level of freshwater is 0C, but when you add 50 metres of fast moving water, things get a little more complicated. Because the water is moving, the freezing process takes a lot lo...nger. The first ice crystals have to cling to the cold rock surfaces, and they form a structure called "Frazil Crystals", which also act as a supercooling agent that floats around in the turbulent waters. These frazil crystals slowly build out from the rock, creating an anchor point, then lengthens to create a frozen column the length of the waterfall. As soon as the water from the river touches this frozen pillar, it goes over the edge and freezes mid-fall. When you walk to the base of Alexander Falls on our trails, you can get the feeling you just walked into a space where time itself has stopped.
