When there's trouble afoot, most people run in the opposite direction. It is a basic instinct after all that most people follow to keep themselves safe. However, there are a select few that will run towards the danger to help in any way they can. This week on Bizz Talk, we highlight a local paramedic, Eddy Scarpaza. Eddy works closely with the Kingston General Hospital (KGH) and helps out with the auxiliary department’s fundraisers. The department raises money for the hospita...l through several fundraisers. Eddy's mother worked for Kingston General Hospital and coordinated multiple fundraising events in the (KGH). Her personal favorite was the Teddy Bear Campaign (TBC) because it supported the children in the pediatric units of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC). His mother was featured in one of the teddy bear fundraisers. The goal of the TBC is to purchase medical equipment and sponsor teddy bears during the period from November 12th to December 21st. The medical equipment assists medical professionals in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of pediatric patients. Each year the funds go towards. Seeing her drive to help people made him want to do the same that much more and ultimately lead to him applying to become a paramedic. He viewed the program as the best way to use his skills and abilities to help his community, just like the fundraiser. Unfortunately, his mother passed away after losing her battle with cancer a week before he started the program. This made him more determined to graduate the program to make her proud as she did not get to see him graduate or do the job. Furthermore, following her passing, he decided that the best way to honour her memory was to continue to fundraise and raise awareness for the campaign in her honour and memory. Eddy has annually dedicated him to fundraise for this charity in her honour and remembrance. If there is a local business or group initiative that you believe we should highlight, let us know. Have you ever broken a bone or torn a muscle or ligament? For those of you that have not, it is not a pleasant feeling. Your pain receptors kick into overdrive. Your body will go into shock as the area begins to swell and become numb to the touch. In some cases, you will not feel the pain immediately. For most people, going through something like this would be enough to put them on the sidelines for a long time. However, one person decided to take the pain she felt from teari...ng her knee and turn it into a summer project to give back. This week on Bizz Talk, we would like to highlight Elizabeth . Growing up as a very active person, Elizabeth is no stranger to bumps, bruises sprains. But when she tore her ACL, something was a little different. The time it took for her knee to heal and fully recover was a lot longer than she thought. As a result, she found herself with a lot of time and energy. Having always had athletics in her life to keep her moving, slowing down and recovering on the a coach or watching her teammates continue to push for the gold was a bit of a shock to her but also rewarding. She began to think of others who had to sit out because of various reasons. The biggest one that she kept coming back to was due to illness. After her leg was better, she decided to try and make a difference for those who could not participate. Last summer, she sold handcrafted and customized tie on necklaces, anklets, bracelets, and key chains to raise money for Sick Kids Toronto. Each is made out of recycled plastic baler twine or string. They came in two unique styles being simple or with an assortment of beads to add some style. Half of the money that Elizabeth raised was donated to the Sick Kids Foundation in Toronto. All of the remaining unsold bracelets and necklaces, as well as a few specially-crafted ones, were given to the children as gifts. In total, Elizabeth was able to donate 169 dollars.
