It's that time of year again, back to school time! If your child is entering elementary school, it is important they develop self-advocacy early on. This essential skill will allow them to create the best learning environment for their needs. Being able to self-advocate for your hearing loss is a skill that will carry over well into your adulthood and workplace environment. While you are prepping your new outfits and new school supplies, be sure to prep your hearing aid tool... kit. Put important every-day items in this kit so you are never without! Items can include batteries, cleaning wipes, a dryer, and a hard case to keep your hearing aids safe if needed to be removed. If you are a parent of a child with a hearing loss, or, if you need a quick reminder of important self-advocacy tools, the article below provides a checklist to kick-off the new school year! https://www.hearinglikeme.com/back-to-school-hearing-loss-/

If a loved one has a hearing loss, it is important to show your support for them every step of the way. Some people have difficulty asking for help or may feel embarrassed by their hearing loss. Being an advocate for a person with a hearing loss, or encouraging that person to advocate for their own hearing loss, can help breakdown social barriers that they may face. Being an advocate for those with hearing loss can be as simple as reminding those around you to speak face-to-face with the person with the hearing loss and rephrasing any sentence that is misunderstood.

October is National Audiology Awareness Month. Hearing loss can impact a person of any age. In fact, half of those with hearing loss are under the age of 65. This means it is never too early to test your or your child's hearing. Noise-induced hearing loss is on the rise. The good news is that noise-induced hearing loss is preventable! Limit your exposure to loud sounds, stand at a safe distance from loud noise sources and wear noise protection when required.... Trust your hearing health care to one of our highly trained Audiologists, who specialize in evaluating and treating hearing loss.

Some professions are at a higher risk of developing a noise-induced hearing loss over time. Prolonged exposure to loud sounds, such as drills and heavy machinery, can damage your hearing. Because the hearing loss can develop slowly over time, you may not notice your hearing difficulties right away. It is important to protect your hearing now to avoid any permanent damage. Tinnitus is described as a ringing, whistling or buzzing sound in either one or both of your ears. While there is no known "cure" for tinnitus, there are several options to help you manage your symptoms. The severity of your tinnitus can be brought on by stress, so it is important to learn to manage the level of stress and anxiety you experience day to day. Here are some tips to help lower your level of stress and anxiety! -Reduce your caffeine intake... -Get a good night sleep -Practice yoga or meditation -Listen to white noise or other quiet sounds you find soothing, especially while trying to fall asleep -Avoid noisy areas (loud noises can exaggerate the tinnitus symptoms) Did you also know that alcohol consumption can increase your tinnitus symptoms? This is because alcohol increases blood flow to your inner ears and can enhance the ringing. To help lower the risk of tinnitus, it is important to take your hearing seriously. Make sure to always carry a pair of earplugs with you if you are planning to attend a noisy environment, and reduce the time you spend in that noisy environment. Providing our brain with proper auditory stimulation by appropriately treating hearing loss is linked to reducing cognitive decline and dementia. As it can take time for our brain to adjust to sounds that it may have been missing for years, it is important to seek treatment for your hearing loss at the first signs of hearing difficulty. At Cambridge Audiology, we recommend developing a healthy hearing routine while you are in good mental and physical health. These healthy habits will continue into your aging years.
