The Hamlet of Cambridge Bay is once again requesting residents of Cambridge Bay to complete population survey forms that have been dropped off at various locations in our community. Survey forms are private and confidential. The purpose of the Survey will assist the Municipality of Cambridge Bay in assessing the current population. It will also help the hamlet make choices as to how to plan ahead for the population growth of Cambridge Bay. We can also use the population su...rvey information to make informed decisions on the many different programs and services offered to the residents of Cambridge Bay. For example: programs or services for the elderly, men and women, young adults, teenage groups or children. Due to Covid-19 restrictions we could not do home visits to complete the population survey. Your assistance in filling out survey forms will be of value to assist the community to better serve residents on many levels. We look forward to receiving your completed survey form. In the form we are asking how many people live in the house you live in, how old each person is, the number of males/females. How many are temporarily living in your house or is anyone living away from home (is anyone away for school, or moved out of territory or will they return?) A drop off box has been placed in the Post Office for you to drop off your completed survey forms. Also some completed forms will be picked up at various locations If you have already filled out a form prior to this request, Thank You so much and we appreciate your involvement and your participation in the survey, your address has been marked off on a Map to show you have already filled out a form.

To help with this, we please ask you when clearing your property of snow to not push it onto the roads. It is best to push it towards the back of your property, or off to the side while also not blocking access to water/sewage outlets. Orange Shirt Day is a day when we honour the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada and learn more about the history of those schools. What are residential schools? Residential schools were church-run schools where approximately 150,000 Métis, Inuit and First Nations children were sent between the 1860s and the 1990s. The schools harmed Indigenous children by removing them from their families, forcing them to speak English or French instead of... their ancestral languages, disconnecting them from their culture and traditions and forcing them to adopt Christianity in order to assimilate into Canadian society. The government has since acknowledged that this approach was wrong, cruel and ineffective, and offered an official apology to the Indigenous people of Canada in 2008. Why is September 30th a special date? September 30th falls during the time of year when Indigenous children were taken away to residential school. Why is it an orange shirt? The orange shirt in Orange Shirt Day refers to the new shirt that Phyllis Webstad was given to her by her grandmother for her first day of school at St. Joseph’s Mission residential school in British Columbia. When Phyllis got to school, they took away her clothes, including her new shirt. It was never returned. To Phyllis, the colour orange has always reminded her of her experiences at residential school and, as she has said, how my feelings didn’t matter, how no one cared and I felt like I was worth nothing. All of us little children were crying and no one cared. See more
