Camp ABK

Camp ABK has been enjoyed by tens of thousands of people throughout its 60 years. It is important to remember that our ministry's successes are because God is good, and because many who came before us were faithful in listening and responding to God's call on their lives. Evelyn Miller was one of those people. She was the visionary behind the camp so many of us enjoy today. On September 30th Evelyn went home to be with her Heavenly Father. Thank God for many servants like Ev...elyn who made camp what it is today. An excerpt from ABK's 'History' page Camp Aush-Bik-Koong had its beginning in the mid-1950’s. Evelyn Miller (nee Taylor), a child evangelist based in Elliot Lake, had a vision for a Bible Camp in northern Ontario. Having grown up in Walford, Ontario, Evelyn remembered swimming at Sugar Lake, and thought the setting was ideal for a children’s summer camp. Upon approaching the owner of the property, she was turned down flat, as he wasn’t interested in selling a piece of prime waterfront property. Evelyn kept after the owner, and in 1958, he agreed to sell the property asking how much she had. Nothing, was Evelyn’s response, But the Lord will provide. And provide he did! Things moved quickly, as a group of people who shared Evelyn’s vision for a Bible Camp for children stepped forward to make the vision a reality, forming the first Camp Committee in 1959. Some provided financially. Some provided their time and talents to get the project off the ground. The first Board certainly stepped out in faith. Brochures were printed in March of 1960. A group of volunteers, led by Willie McLellan from Sault Ste. Marie, broke ground in May of 1960. This morning marked one of the last staff devotions for summer 2020. It was an encouraging morning as we reminisced about the ones who have gone before. The men and women who have served camp faithfully and who have left a legacy behind with each camper and staff member they encountered. Their lives challenged us this morning to run our race well and remember who we are racing for (Philippians 3:14). Although our staff were few, we were surrounded by people of integrity.... This summer, even while closed and camper-less, we were joined by beautiful people who humbly served and whose legacies already point to Christ. Thank you to each one who has come to volunteer, to those at home who supported financially and to those who carried us in prayer. Thank you for being a part of this ministry. So to you - wherever you are, we pray that today you press on. Remember who you are racing for and the One our legacy will point back to. We praise the Lord for the gift of this summer and the honour it was to serve on the quiet shores of Sugar Lake. #thankful, #iloveabk, #totherock, #60yearsofgodsfaithfulness
