Thank you to everyone for your comments, I am so humbled and appreciative of your support. I made the commitment to not submit any expense claims of any kind un...til we had a fair and more transparent system. It is my belief that that the compensation that I receive for being District 4 councilor, is enough to cover all expenses I incur to represent you. In addition to covering my own travel costs, I also pay for my own cell phone, internet and am not enrolled in the CBRM employee benefits package. All sponsorships and donations to groups, sports teams, not for profits and organizations are out of my own pocket not the CBRM coffers. I do this because I believe in supporting my neighbors and our community, to give back and help others whenever I can. I do not attend conferences or out of town meetings because I have always thought this to be a waste of taxpayers’ money. We now see as a result of COVID-19 that technology has proven travel to be unnecessary and we can still conduct business efficiently via other means. I also made a commitment when I was elected in 2016 to address the unfair and non-transparent $140.00 week travel allowance paid out to councilors. It took me 3 years to get it to the floor of council for a vote and it is finally repealed! Now CBRM repays travel expenses to elected officials and senior staff based on receipts and there is more transparency because we must file online, making us accountable to taxpayers to explain how this money is being spent. Service to my neighbors and the community is an honor and a privilege not a career. If I am fortunate enough to be re-elected I will continue to cover my own costs and to give back to our community. I also promise to bring forward the term limit conversation for councilors and mayor, because it is time.
