Since her death in 1979, the woman who discovered what the universe is made of has not so much as received a memorial plaque. Her newspaper obituaries do not m...ention her greatest discovery. [] Every high school student knows that Isaac Newton discovered gravity, that Charles Darwin discovered evolution, and that Albert Einstein discovered the relativity of time. But when it comes to the composition of our universe, the textbooks simply say that the most abundant atom in the universe is hydrogen. And no one ever wonders how we know. Jeremy Knowles, discussing the complete lack of recognition Cecilia Payne gets, even today, for her revolutionary discovery. (via alliterate) OH WAIT LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT CECILIA PAYNE Cecilia Payne’s mother refused to spend money on her college education, so she won a scholarship to Cambridge. Cecilia Payne completed her studies, but Cambridge wouldn’t give her a degree because she was a woman, so she said to heck with that and moved to the United States to work at Harvard. Cecilia Payne was the first person ever to earn a Ph.D. in astronomy from Radcliffe College, with what Otto Strauve called the most brilliant Ph.D. thesis ever written in astronomy. Not only did Cecilia Payne discover what the universe is made of, she also discovered what the sun is made of (Henry Norris Russell, a fellow astronomer, is usually given credit for discovering that the sun’s composition is different from the Earth’s, but he came to his conclusions four years later than Payne after telling her not to publish). Cecilia Payne is the reason we know basically anything about variable stars (stars whose brightness as seen from earth fluctuates). Literally every other study on variable stars is based on her work. Cecilia Payne was the first woman to be promoted to full professor from within Harvard, and is often credited with breaking the glass ceiling for women in the Harvard science department and in astronomy, as well as inspiring entire generations of women to take up science. Cecilia Payne is awesome and everyone should know her. (OP: Matthew Gardner)

We are featuring members of the Calgary community and some of our loyal clients. We invite you to take the time to get to know these fantastic individuals. This... week features TIM O'HARA; Lawyer, Published Author, and Sports Enthusiast: A photo hangs in Tim O’Hara’s law practice that captures a lifetime of memories. Like all great pictures there is a story. On the right sits Tim on the left is one of the world’s most celebrated boxers, Muhammed Ali, with his fist playfully extended. So how did Tim, a lawyer, get to sit with the champion? The story goes back generations when Tim’s great grandfather purchased a quarter section of land in Alberta to raise a family. The family remained there until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. His grandfather enlisted, and his mother moved back to Ontario to be with family. As his father grew up, he would play football in the Navy, worked in the Ontario Provincial Police, and in his later years, he owned a certified Studebaker dealership gas station. Tim grew up in Ontario, eventually attending the University of Toronto for Commerce and Finance but graduating in English Literature. A recession hit Canada in 1977, just as the oil patch in Alberta started to boom. Tim went out west, worked for the Bank of Montreal for a year and attending law school the following year. So how did the photo of Ali end up in Tim’s office? In 1981, Edmonton was celebrating the opening of their latest attraction the West Edmonton Mall. Celebrities from all over were invited to attend the grand opening, and an aging Muhammad Ali was chief among them. The owner of the stores, Furs by Mitchell, went up to meet Ali and invited him to his store in Calgary for a promotion meet and greet. There Tim and Ali sat down and held a pose for the camera’s 12 second delay. Call it bad luck when the photo was developed after the event was over the focus was set to the background leaving Tim and Ali in a blur. Not many get the chance to meet their heroes a second time but for Tim it was the perfect opportunity to re-shoot the photo. Three months later the two sat down again, set up the pose, and got the photo. Muhammad Ali’s golden age may have been over, but that gave Tim longer to strike up a conversation. Ali was aging, but he had not lost any capacity". Today, when Tim isn’t at his law practice he can be found driving around Calgary in his ’51 Studebaker, playing hockey, or writing his latest Sci-Fi novel three hobbies that can all be traced back to his youth. With my dad’s garage, I grew up looking at Studebaker catalogues and promotions. I also developed my love of hockey around that time, too. Shirriff pudding offered collectible coins Tim’s coin featured the Chicago Blackhawks, who had just won the Stanley Cup in 1961. His English and Philosophy courses inspired him to write three books. When asked if he has anything on the go, Tim likes to remark, I never tell people what I am doing If you tell people you lose all motivation to do it.
