The Winnipeg Foundation is celebrating it's 100th Anniversary this year. It was started with a donation of $100,000 and is now valued at $1.4 billion as of the 2020 fiscal year-end. In 2020 they distributed $73 million to approximately 1000 charities! This year the Campbellford/Seymour Community Foundation is celebrating is 20th Anniversary. We have distributed almost $4 million in grants since we starting granting in 2003. The Winnipeg Foundation was based on the idea of the... Cleveland Foundation, the first-ever community foundation. The idea was that more could be achieved if local philanthropists worked together by pooling and investing resources which then could be used to support the community in perpetuity. Today, Canada's Community Foundation movement continues to gather momentum with at least 191 across Canada. Frederick Goff, who established the Cleveland Foundation wrote "How fine it would be if man about to make a Will could go to a permanently enduring organization.... and say: 'Here is a large sum of money. I want to leave it to be used for the good of the community, but I have no way of knowing what will be the greatest need of the community 50 years from now, or even 10 years from now. Therefore, I place it in your hands, because you will be here, you and your successors, through the years, to determine what should be done with this sum to make it most useful for people of each succeeding generation.'" Careful management, combined with gifts from others, large and small, result in an increase in a community foundation's granting ability!
