Did you know? Changes to the provincial budget may have a significant impact on auto insurance claims. Last week, Ontario's Finance Minister shared plans for the 2020-21 budget, including changes to Direct Compensation Property Damage that would make it an optional vs. mandatory component of auto coverage. While this change would increase consumer choice and alleviate some policy costs, the concern is that uninformed consumers will be inadequately protected, particularly in ...the event of not-at-fault crashes where their vehicles need extensive repair. Heads up, GTA drivers! In an attempt to improve traffic flow, the speed limit on certain Ontario highways (402, QEW, and 417) has been increased to 110 km/hour. Please remember: ... 1. Always pay attention to signage and speed limit changes. 2. Increase following distance and space between your vehicle and others. 3. To those drivers who already tend to speed, this is NOT an opportunity to further increase your speed. Increases in speed lead to increased risk of injury and fatality. 4. Let's talk kitchen safety. Getting comfortable in the kitchen from a young age helps promote a healthy relationship with food and boosts self confidence in preparing healthy meals. As we are getting back into routine, here are some tips to encourage your young chefs while preventing accidents: Cook with your kids to help them build the skills they need to fly solo. ... Remind them to always watch what they are cooking and never leave food unattended while cooking. Make a habit of keeping pots and pans on the back burner and turning pot handles inward on the stove top. Make it a rule to eat at the table. We've all done it: eating in front of the TV. However a surprising number of burns are caused when people spill hot food while trying to balance it on their lap. Building confidence in the kitchen is an essential life skill and it all starts with safety. #burnprevention #campisilaw #championswithheart #personalinjurylaw #kitchensafety

Recovering from a personal injury is challenging. Add home-schooling responsibilities during COVID and it becomes even more difficult. Since the spring, many of our clients with kids have had home-schooling added to their responsibilities, even while they are struggling with their own recovery. In some cases, our clients have only 1 computer and 3 kids, so online learning is "happening" via cell phone. We have been creative at finding ways to get these kids a tablet or lapto...p where possible. We are also fighting for insurers to include tutoring as a rehab benefit. We would love to do more! If you are a health care professional, or someone recovering from an injury, we want to hear from you. Please comment below with any new pandemic-related needs you think may have been overlooked during these times. Happy Halloween from the staff at Campisi LLP. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind from safekids.org 1.Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross. ... 2. Put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street. 3. Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them. 4. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings. 5. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars. 6.Join kids under age 12 for trick-or-treating. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, tell them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups. Costumes for a Safe Halloween 1.Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors. 2. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision. 3. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers. 4. When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls. Drive Extra Safely on Halloween 1. Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways. 2. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs. 3. Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully. 4. Get rid of any distractions - like your phone - in your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. 5. Turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances. 6. Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Be especially alert for kids during those hours.
