Our last Newsletter of the year went out earlier this week. Take a look through the news and wonderful articles compiled as we close out this difficult year with our gratitude to our wonderful community and move into the next year with so much hope! Wishing our entire CK Community and your loved ones a very wonderful New Years Eve, we look forward to seeing you all in 2021! https://conta.cc/3pBJCG4

Camp Kawartha 26.12.2020

To all of you who have donated during this tumultuous year a BIG THANK YOU. Many of you stepped up and have given generously! If you haven’t made a contribution yet, then it is not too late. This year, as for many other organizations, has been enormously trying for Camp Kawartha. And the next few months look challenging as well. If you value the work that Camp Kawartha does in connecting children to nature and fostering stewardship, please consider a gift to help us continu...e to deliver this important mission. Our greatest need now is funding for our sustainable Health Centre. We still need raise funds to complete the building and to outfit it. We’ll need desks, computers, and office chairs; beds, bedding, and pillows, stethoscopes and thermometers. With your support, we can move forward into the New Year ready to finish the new healthcare facility, and have it fully ready to go for summer campers 2021! https://campkawartha.ca/donate/

2020 is quickly winding down and Camp Kawartha's staff and volunteers want to extend a thank you to all of our donors who gave this year and helped us pay bills, keep many staff working, even start to build a new building! It seemed that every week someone would send an e-transfer or a cheque, usually with heart-felt acknowledgements of the value they place in Camp Kawartha. We are so grateful because that kept us going as we bobbed and weaved our way through the tumult of 2...020. For those who still want to give there is time to make your donation. A year-end contribution of $25, $50 or $100 in support of the new Health Centre will help purchase desks, computers, and office chairs; beds, bedding, and pillows; or even stethoscopes, thermometers, and tongue depressors! With your support, we can move forward into the New Year ready to finish the new healthcare facility, and have it fully kitted out and ready for summer campers 2021! Please consider making your end of year gift online (www.campkawartha.ca), by e-transfer ([email protected]), or by cheque (Camp Kawartha 1010 Birchivew Road, Douro-Dummer, ON K0L 2H0). Help us build to meet the new demands of healthcare, and to create an inspiring showcase of sustainable design and construction.

Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday evening for our Annual General Meeting! It's been an incredibly difficult year, but we've made it through with a great deal of support from our community and hard work from our dedicated team of staff and volunteers. Take a look at our Annual Report for all we were able to accomplish this year. https://campkawartha.ca/pdf/about/Annual-Report-2020.pdf We're looking forward to celebrating our 100th Anniversary in 2021 and hope that... we're able to come together to share in these celebrations with our community. Last night we saw the end to Jason Huffman's 5 year term as Chair of the Board of Directors. We want to thank Jason for all his support, assistance, and guidance as we made our way through the last 5 years, it's been an absolute pleasure to work with him and we're happy to see him continue on as one of our Board of Directors. We're very pleased to have Myke Healy step into the role of Chair of the Board of Directors. Myke is the Director of Teaching and Learning at Trinity College School, a long-time supporter of Camp Kawartha, a CK parent, and a neighbour.

LOOK AT THIS!! Posted @withregram @straworksinc Health Centre, Camp Kawartha. WE HAVE A SHELL! We have a steel roof supplied by Havelock Metal and tarps recycled from various previous jobs on the exterior of our straw bale walls which we will plaster in the spring. It’s been a busy fall to get to this point. Not just the physical building but the logistics of planning and preparing to plaster the inside this winter. In October we built a sand box in the basement and ha...d the excavator dump 4 cu.yd. of sand in before we put the floor joists on. At that time we also had a pallet of bagged lime boomed in and since then have hand bombed 250 buckets of clay inside. Heat, water and dehumidifiers are on their way, and then we’ll be set for winter plastering after we prep. the bale walls and install the windows and doors. #strawbalehouse #strawbalebuilding #strawbaleconstruction #carbonstorage #lowembodiedcarbon #naturalbuilding #campkawartha See more

A Special Auction in Support of the Health Centre! Local artist, David Hickey, has always been a great supporter of the Camp. He approached us recently with an idea. Because the Camp was shut down from March through to September and our annual major fundraising event was sidelined, David has donated a beautiful piece of his artwork for us to auction off during December. For well over a decade I have helped Camp Kawartha with their spring fundraising event. Due to the canc...ellation of this year’s long anticipated event I wanted to offer this work entitled Twin Pines for an online auction. The full proceeds will be used by the Camp to further enhance their ongoing programs and activities. I am delighted to do so. David Hickey David has made a career of creating both metal sculptures and paintings that capture iconic features of the Canadian landscape. The Twin Pines wall hanging measures 43 tall (109 cm) x 25 (63.5 cm) wide and is valued at $950.00. This amazing piece would look good in an office or in your home! The auction runs until Tuesday, December 31st at 6:00 p.m. The winning bidder will be contacted in the New Year!!

The rain, the snow, and the muck didn't stop us having another great week of Forest School! Winter Registration is now open! Join us for the whole semester, month-long sessions, or week-long sessions and see your children thrive in an outdoor learning environment! Some highlights from the past week included: Kindergartners made bannock, progressed with reading levels, worked on counting by 2, 5, and 10, did science experiments with snow that explored different forms of matter..., and overall had some great snowy and rainy outdoor adventures! Primary students spent last week learning to walk and talk like the animals, to better understand the secret lives they lead and read the clues they leave behind. Everyday was an exercise in stealth, opening our eyes and ears to the experiences of those around us. With the foundation laid, they will embark on a tracking expedition this week! Juniors worked on their social study units last week, stepping back into the time of the Coureur de Bois and the early days of the Fur Trade in Canada. Students participated in a mock Fur Trade enactment as a Coureur de Bois, dramatized role playing, use of Anishinaabe words, and math calculations were all part of being the Coureur de Bois. In addition to the economic aspect for the Fur Traders, they also spent time discussing the social and cultural impacts of the fur trade on the First Nations communities.

This is IMPORTANT! Have you been following the changes being made to policies that protect Ontario’s environment and conservation authorities? Please contact your local MPP and let them know this is not okay! These new, and never previously discussed, amendments expressly force Conservation Authorities to issue permits for development, even if it will cause flooding or erosion and jeopardize human health and safety, if the government issues a Minister’s Zoning Order (MZO). They also force Conservation Authorities to accept and implement pay to slay agreements with developers to allow natural values to be wiped off the landscape for a fee.

Our builders came across these boulders while digging and decided they wanted to adapt their plans to include them in the construction of the Health Centre!... Check out their full explanation and details on the progress below: Reposted from @straworksinc Health Centre, Camp Kawartha. It’s a juggle/ struggle to make a big changes on the fly but when these boulders surfaced during the excavation, I couldn’t let them go. Thankfully, our P. Eng Tim Krahn is amenable to my crazy ideas and over the phone, the plan changed from bearing our posts on concrete piers to anchoring them to boulders on a rubble trench foundation. Thank you Tim! You rock! RESURRECTED. These posts were trees standing right there not long ago. They had to come down to make way for the Health Centre which is in the same spot but 4 times the size as the old nurses cabin and a little closer to the lake. #strawbalehouse #strawbalebuilding #strawbaleconstruction #carbonstorage #lowembodiedcarbon #naturalbuilding

It’s so exciting to see this project come together! Thank you @straworksinc for sharing all your progress and the details on this sustainable building! Posted @withregram @straworksinc Health Centre, Camp Kawartha. FOUNDATION: Nexcem is the only ICF that isn’t made of foam or polystyrene (high carbon emissions). It’s made here in Ontario from waste wood and oops, cement-something we are trying to avoid. But, some of carbon emissions from the cement are are offset by the wo...od that sequestered carbon from the atmosphere when it was growing. It’s tough to make perfect choices at the foundation stage but at least with Nexcem there’s a trade off. AND it’s super to work with - you can cut it with a circular saw (I love that and typically do most of the cutting), you can pin it together with a nail gun, various thicknesses of Roxul inserts are available from R-14 to R-28, and the blocks are light enough that I can lift them but heavy enough that they stack to form solid walls that don’t need much bracing before pouring. At Camp Kawartha, the main floor of the Health Centre will sit on a walkout basement constructed of Nexcem and straw bale walls. The two walls that back into the hill are Nexcem and the front two are straw bale. That way, we are only using heavy cement based materials and concrete where it counts, and switching to straw bale walls (higher R-value and a lower carbon footprint) as soon as we are out of the dirt and away from the hill. This time used Mike’s Concrete Pumping out of Buckhorn, to fill the forms with a 20 MPA 50:50 slag and cement mix supplied by LaFarge. #strawbalehouse #strawbalebuilding #strawbaleconstruction #carbonstorage #lowembodiedcarbon #naturalbuilding

These folks are amazing! Look at this progress on the new Health Centre! Also check out the details in their posts, they are sharing all the materials and steps they are taking in the construction process Posted @withregram @straworksinc Health Centre, Camp Kawartha. FAST FOOT / NEXCEM MONOPOUR. This time we did our usual BETTER. Instead of placing and pinning our first course of Nexcem block to our footing we used Fastfoot, a polyethylene forming fabric, and poured t...he two together. Our reasons were 3. LESS CONCRETE. The inverse T shape created between the footing and the first block is strong which means we could get a way with a thinner (4) footing with lower strength (15 MPA 50:50 slag and cement). CHEAPER. Two rolls including shipping was less than 1/2 the price of lumber. RISING DAMP. Once we connect our interior air/vapour barrier to it on the inside and our waterproofing to it on the outside, we will have created a complete seal between ground moisture and the bottom of the building. Thank you P. Eng Tim Krahn for working this out with us! This is our new MO. See more

PROGRESS! @straworksinc is sharing their progress as they work on constructing our brand new Health Centre! Thanks for sharing these great photos and explaining the process! #campkawartha ... Posted @withregram @straworksinc Health Centre, Camp Kawartha. RUBBLE TRENCH FOUNDATION The mining and burning of limestone to make cement is energy intensive. A ton of cement equals nearly a ton of carbon emissions. This project starts avoiding materials like cement, at the foundation stage and carries that all the way through to the finish. A rubble trench foundation, a bed of compacted stone, replaces a conventional concrete frost wall. Next a walkout basement constructed of Nexcem ICF on the hill sides and straw bale walls on the walkout sides, will sit on top. #strawbalehouse #strawbalebuilding #strawbaleconstruction #carbonstorage #lowembodiedcarbon #naturalbuilding #rubbletrenchfoundation

Say Hi to the awesome @straworksinc team, who are going to be building our new Health Centre! We’re so excited to be working with them and we can’t wait to see them construct this new environmentally friendly building! Posted @withregram @straworksinc NEW PROJECT! We are building a 1400 sq.ft. straw bale Health Centre at Camp Kawartha! This dream facility will replace their 100 year old very tired nurses cabin. (You should have seen the nurses go at it with sledge hammer...s). I have been designing, estimating and lining this project up for a over a year and we are thrilled to finally start!
