Northeastern Ontario Research Alliance on Human Trafficking 20.11.2020

The Northeastern Ontario Research Alliance on Human Trafficking (NORAHT) is deeply grieved by the unnecessary deaths of Chantel Moore and Regis Korchinski-Paquet, who are among the latest victims of systemic racism in Canada. Their recent deaths follow on the heels of global protests against the murder of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in the United States; further proving systemic racism is not just an American problem, it is also a Canadian problem. Black and Indigenous pe...oples are drastically overrepresented in terms of poverty, poor health, police surveillance, racial profiling incarceration, and child apprehension across the country. NORAHT urges the government of Canada and the province of Ontario to implement the recommendations of the United Nations’ Report of the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent on its mission to Canada (2017), the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action (2015) and the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls’ Calls for Justice (2019). Given the intersectional nature of systemic racism and its impact on the sex trade, it is also crucial to note the overrepresentation of Indigenous and racialized women as victims of human trafficking. These women are burdened with bearing the brunt of anti-trafficking campaigns and policies that reinforce white supremacy, colonization and heteropatriarchy. NORAHT also urges policy makers and service providers to take a critical anti-trafficking approach that honours the self-determination of Indigenous and racialized women and their communities.
