Amazing team effort to rehabilitate and return this precious juvenile leatherback to his ocean home! Gratitude all around! Jellyfish Art Two Conchs Charters
This is amazing! Scientists almost never see leatherbacks this size!
If you are in Atlantic Canada, you can help us help sea turtles by volunteering with our Sea Turtle Beach Patrol! We would love to have you join us!
Join us on IG tomorrow: @canadaseaturtle
A fisherman taking the time to safely disentangle a leatherback turtle off Tobago. This is a great example of disentanglement practice: the turtle and the fisherman are safe, and the turtle swims off with no gear attached.
This article is worth your time. Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson is a marine biologist and the founder of Ocean Collectiv (www.oceancollectiv.co). We are grateful to her for her wisdom, as well as the time, energy and love it took to write this piece.
Good leatherback news! With Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Nature Seekers.
This map shows the tracks of the leatherback turtles that we helped satellite tag off the coast of Nova Scotia this summer in collaboration with Fisheries and Oceans Canada: Ruby, Sara, Isabel, Sir David, and Kay.
Thanks, The Trail Shop, for inviting us to give a Turtle Tuesday Talk. The audience was lovely and we were inspired by the amazing conversations afterward about sea turtles and international conservation. We appreciated you opening your doors to us!
Hope to see our Halifax friends at The Trail Shop tonight at 6:30 p.m.! Come hear about sea turtles in Canada...and learn more about our work in Trinidad, too. If you are considering joining us for our Field Trip to Trinidad (seaturtle.ca/field-trip), this is also a chance to meet our trip leader and ask a few questions.
Hey Halifax friends! Were excited to be partnering with The Trail Shop next week (Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at the store) to do a Turtle Talk. Come hear about sea turtles in Canada...and learn more about our work in Trinidad, too. If you are considering joining us for our Field Trip to Trinidad (seaturtle.ca/field-trip), this is also a chance to meet our trip leader and ask a few questions.
Thanks, Sobeys!
As our beach patrol season of data collection wraps up this month, we want to send a big THANK YOU to all of our volunteers! We are always grateful to have dozens of people around the Maritimes dedicating so many hours (and kilometres) to this project. (Photo: M.L. Polegatto)
Happy Monday! Greetings from the sea turtle beach patrol (Photo: M. Vallis) #pups4turtles #beachpatrol #citizenscience #communityscience
Hello sunshine! Big thanks to our beach patrol volunteers, who are still at work on the coast. All patrollers should submit their data by the end of the year, but please give us a call 24/7 year-round if you find a stranded sea turtle! Toll free: 1-888-729-4667 (Photo: M. Vallis)
As the weather gets colder and stormier, all kinds of things can wash up on our beaches! We are grateful to our beach patrol volunteers for keeping an eye out for sea turtles who may end in trouble on our coast. Photo credit: S. Hudson #citizenscience #beachpatrol
Wed add #seaturtles, too.
We love seeing furry friends helping with our sea turtle beach patrol. Welcome back to the team, Tilly! (Photo: M.L. Polegatto) #pups4turtles #citizenscience #communityscience #seaturtle #beachpatrol
We are grateful to have volunteers patrolling our local beaches for cold-stunned turtles. And we love living vicariously when they send us beautiful photos from their beach walks! Thankfully, no stranded turtles so far. More info: www.seaturtle.ca/beach-patrol (Photo: M.L. Polegatto)
We are looking for volunteers who Live in the Maritimes Can access a local beach on a regular basis Want to help us collect data on stranded marine animals... Its not too late to lend a hand this year - join our sea turtle beach patrol! http://seaturtle.ca/beach-patrol/

Its that time of year again! When the weather cools off, sea turtles may run into trouble and end up cold-stunned on our beaches. If you live in a coastal community in the Maritimes, you can help us find these turtles and collect important data on our coastline by joining our Sea Turtle Beach Patrol! We ask that our volunteers walk their local beach once per week until December to check for stranded animals. Thinking about all of the people taking part in todays #climatestrike and all of the amazing people worldwide who help with our sea turtle conservation work. https://seaturtle.ca/blog/2019/09/27/leaders-and-heroes/
One of the things we love most about our #seaturtlecentre is how close it is to the ocean. But there is a real possibility that #hurricanedorian might stop by this weekend. So we are closing Friday, September 6, at noon, to start securing our space. (We have to take a lot of things out of the centre to protect them in case of a storm surge, which could swamp us.) We will reopen on Monday, September 9, at 10 a.m. (We hope!) #seaturtlecentre #seaturtle #seaturtleconservation #oceaneducation #mywaterfrontns #halifax #canadianseaturtlenetwork
Come visit us at the Sea Turtle Centre this long weekend! You bring the questions and well bring the turtle facts #seaturtlecentre #seaturtle #seaturtleconservation #oceaneducation #outreach #summer #halifax #canadianseaturtlenetwork
For our second turtle naming contest, we chose three iconic women in science: Sylvia Earle, Jane Goodall and Greta Thunberg. The votes are in and @gretathunberg is the winner! Amazing to envision turtle Greta making her way south while Greta was travelling by vessel to the United Nations Summit, in an effort to make a stand about the carbon emissions created by air travel! #canadianseaturtlenetwork #canadianseaturtlecentre #seaturtleconservation #seaturtle #leatherbackseaturtle #outreach #oceaneducation #climatechange #climateactivist #gretathunberg #contest #winner #conservation
We are excited to partner with The Tare Shop for this Saturdays Ocean Explorers event! Plastic pollution is a threat to sea turtles and other marine animals today. Come explore the problems with plastic in the ocean and how you can make a meaningful difference to ocean animals. Check out our complete Ocean Explorers schedule: https://seaturtle.ca//ocean-explorers-2019-schedule-poster
Though Sea Turtle Camp has come to a close, were excited to share what our campers experienced over the two weeks! In week one we visited the @backtothesea_ns where campers learned about sea creatures in Nova Scotia. A highlight was the squid dissection where campers got to write their name in squid ink! #CanadianSeatTurtleNetwork #CSTN #SeaTurtleCamp #BacktotheSeaSociety #environmentalcamp #outreach #education #STEM #oceaneducation #oceanconservation #seaturtleconservation #seaturtle #summercamp #fun
Yesterday we visited the Indian Point Naturalist Camp to tell them about our research and conservation efforts with the leatherback sea turtle! Thanks for having us! #seaturtle #seaturtleconservation #CSTN #canadianseaturtlenetwork #education #outreach #summercamp
In exactly 9 months, our 2020 #CSTNFieldTrip to Trinidad will kick off! Join us working with nesting leatherback turtles alongside our local partners Nature Seekers and enjoy exploring the culture and landscape of this amazing island. For more info and to begin registration, see www.seaturtle.ca/field-trip
Were at Sir Sandford Fleming park with Adventure Earth Centre until 3pm today! Come learn about turtles, make your own aquarium and help with the turtle art exhibit! #outreach #canadianseaturtlenetwork #cstn #saveourseas #seaturtle #seaturtleconservation
Our Sea Turtle Campers learned about different fishing methods and the bycatch they produce! We played a game where different tools represented fishing methods (spear fishing = chopsticks, net fishing = spoon and trawl fishing = small cup), and the blue beads represent their target fish! After each round they had to count how many target fish they caught and how many bycatch. #seaturtlecamp #cstnCamp #environmentalcamp #STEM #fishing #canadianseaturtlenetwork #CSTN
During this weeks Ocean Explorers event, we will introduce you to the incredible organisms living in our own backyard! Join us on Satruday at our #SeaTurtleCentre for a morning of activities dedicated to the marvelous marine invertebrates of Halifax Harbour. Check out our complete Ocean Explorers schedule: https://seaturtle.ca//ocean-explorers-2019-schedule-poster
Were thrilled to welcome Ocean Sonics Ltd as a special guest for this weeks Ocean Explorers workshop! Drop by our #SeaTurtleCentre on Saturday, 10:30-12:30 for hands-on demos exploring underwater sound, how animals use it, & how noise pollution effects animals and ecosystems. Check out our complete Ocean Explorers schedule: https://seaturtle.ca//ocean-explorers-2019-schedule-poster
Meet our latest tracked turtle: Zelda. This princess is no damsel in distress! Shes a long distance swimmer enjoying a summer of jellyfish feeding off Nova Scotia. When our field team tagged her, she had a shell (curved carapace length) of 150 cm, which means shes the average size for a leatherback in our area! Thanks to all of our #SeaTurtleCentre visitors who donated and helped us to choose her name. Safe travels, Zelda!
Were excited to welcome special guests from Nature Seekers for Saturdays Ocean Explorers event. Our colleagues have travelled to Halifax from the Caribbean & will share their stories about working with turtles on tropical beaches. Drop in 10:30-12:30 at our #SeaTurtleCentre! Check out our complete Ocean Explorers schedule: https://seaturtle.ca//ocean-explorers-2019-schedule-poster Interested in visiting nesting turtles in Trinidad yourself? We are now accepting registration for our #CSTNFieldTrip 2020! See www.seaturtle.ca/field-trip for more info.
Were on the road again! Today we talked to a fisherman who had seen a leatherback turtle two weeks ago! Weve arrived in Digby for the night and along with leatherbacks, weve been talking to people about the three hard shelled turtles we occasionally find stranded on our shores (the green, Atlantic Ridley and loggerhead sea turtles). In the fall we have a group of volunteers who patrol our beaches for stranded turtles. If you want to get more involved, dont hesitate to reach out! #seaturtle #seaturtleconservation #cstn #canadianseaturtlenetwork #visitnovascotia #roadtrip
We loved meeting Owen from @smreal.nb today! He makes these awesome tees and has donated proceeds to our charity. Thanks for the amazing support, @smreal.nb! #Repost @smreal.nb with @get_repost It was awesome to meet the team at The Canadian Sea Turtle Network today! Learned some cool things about what they do and the sort of things they deal with daily! Thank you from all of us to everyone who helped us reach $400 in donations. Not stopping here, lots to come. We are excited for this weekends Splash of Colour event! Come down to the Halifax Waterfront on July 27/28 to explore live mural painting... and check out existing art like our jellyfish mural! We loved having our #SeaTurtleCentre visitors help us decorate our kiosk with jellies last year and we are excited to see the waterfront getting more and more colourful. (P.S. We will be celebrating SHARKS at this weeks Ocean Explorers, Sat 10:30-12:30, so there are a lot of reasons to come visit this weekend!) #thingstodoinhalifax #mywaterfront #halifaxwaterfront #oceanart #kidsinhalifax #halifaxkids
