Yesterday, Senator Murray Sinclair gave a powerful speech explaining why The Jane Goodall Act is so necessary. Zoocheck is pleased to be supporting this very important legislation and will be doing whatever we can to help it become a reality.

This is a bill Zoocheck and other animal protection groups in Canada have been working on for most of 2020. We are very optimistic that it will pass and if it does it will phase out the keeping of elephants and great apes in Canada. https://www.cbc.ca//jane-goodall-ape-elephant-captivity-1.

Zoos throughout the world routinely discard surplus animals they have irresponsibly produced. Most of the breeding that occurs in zoos involves species that are already common in captivity.

Exotic pets pose many disease risks. Hedgehogs are nocturnal, wide-ranging, largely insectivorous mammals - not the best attributes for a pet.

Zoocheck 06.10.2020

Throughout the world, the evidence is plain to see. The exotic pet trade is supremely destructive to wildlife and animal welfare.

The result of the Ontario government's cormorant hunting season. Multiply this across the province. And it's all for nothing.

Zoocheck 25.07.2020

From what we're hearing this is the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

Not surprisingly cormorant hunters are ignoring the law only a few days into the hunt. This hunt is nothing more than a slaughter designed to appease extremist hunters who hate cormorants. The Ontario government continually professes they make decisions based on the best available science yet in the case of the cormorant hunt they ignored all the science in favour of pandering to the propaganda being spread by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. https://www.orilliamatters.com//dead-cormorants-dumped-alo

In this article, John Ford, a Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association director, said cormorants have ruined vegetation on Chantry Island. He also comments on Toronto's Lesli Street Spit cormorant colony. Chantry Island is a bird sanctuary, as is the Lesli Street Spit. If a bird sanctuary is not an acceptable place for cormorants, who happen to be naturally occurring colonial water birds, what is an acceptable place? Ford also said, "If you get a flock of 500 or 600 cormorants landi...ng in a little bay, they can pretty much wipe out any fish stocks that there is in that bay, he said. Unfortunately, Mr. Ford doesn't provide any examples or evidence and seems, instead, to be making an assumption about cormorant fishing impacts that is rooted more in myth and folklore than science and reality. There are many causes of fish depletion and they usually don't involve cormorants. Ford also said at one time, eastern Ontario was about the only place you would see them and now you see them by the thousands migrating through places like Pelee. His comment about cormorants not being seen previously, except in eastern Ontario, is true. But the reason they weren't seen is because cormorants had been pretty much been wiped out by pesticide poisoning and human persecution. Their reemergence isn't abnormal or out of control, it's simply nature going through a modest rebound. And with just 145,000 cormorants in the province, their numbers are still very low.

One of the colonies filmed for our cormorant documentary short. You'll notice the birds are on a small peninsula and not far away is a heavy industrial area. Scenes like this are sought after nature experiences in other cities around the world. Here in Ontario, the government now treats these stunning, beneficial waterbirds like a disease that needs eradicated. Please spread the word and help us get our pro-cormorant documentary short fully funded. Click here to help https://www.gofundme.com/f/documentary-to-help-cormorants

Will the presence of pelicans help safeguard Ontario's cormorants. Let's hope so. Of course, if pelicans become well established hunters and fishermen will eventually claim they are eating all the fish and will want them controlled.
