This map is a gorgeous piece of art! Beaded map of Canada creates 'a sense of community among Indigenous artists amid the pandemic. What started as a response to pandemic boredom has grown into a collaborative mosaic of beadwork that promotes Indigenous artists across Canada.... Since last March, dozens of Indigenous artists had been taking up a challenge to bead their provinces. Their hard work, diversity in beading styles, techniques, and cultural influences can be seen in the final map. A beaded map was also created for the United States. Beadwork by Amanda Laliberte, Ashley Copage, Ashley McKenzie-Dion, Didi Grandjambe, Jennelle Doyle, Joelle Charlie, Kyla Woodward, Lenore Augustine, Marissa Magneson, Mellz Compton, Monique Jolly, and Rena Laboucan. Graphic design by Justin Romero. Kooteen Creations #indigenousbeadwork #maps

New flower from 100 million years ago Oregon State University researchers have identified a spectacular new genus and species of flower from the mid-Cretaceous period, a male specimen whose sunburst-like reach for the heavens was frozen in time by Burmese amber. "This isn't quite a Christmas flower but it is a beauty, especially considering it was part of a forest that existed 100 million years ago," said George Poinar Jr., professor emeritus in the OSU College of Science.... Findings were published in the Journal of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas. "The male flower is tiny, about 2 millimeters across, but it has some 50 stamens arranged like a spiral, with anthers pointing toward the sky," said Poinar, an international expert in using plant and animal life forms preserved in amber to learn more about the biology and ecology of the distant past. #botanical #botany #biology #ecology #discovery https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas/2020//201222101450.htm

Today is World Mental Health Day. Wishing you a peaceful day with some time in your favourite garden or green space. #WMHD2020 #wmhd
TODAY IS WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY #WMHD2020 #WMHD The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes World Mental Health day every year on October 10, with this year's theme recognizing the drastic change that has come to our daily lives because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The WHO recognizes that "urban green spaces, such as parks, playgrounds, and residential greenery, can promote mental and physical health, and reduce morbidity and mortality in urban residents by providing psychol...ogical relaxation and stress alleviation, stimulating social cohesion, supporting physical activity, and reducing exposure to air pollutants, noise, and excess heat." Due to the ongoing pandemic, half of Canadians report a worsening of their mental health with one in ten saying it has worsened "a lot". In April, experts began forecasting an "echo pandemic" of mental health issues for Canadians. Months later, concern for mental health - and everything that will need to be done to address it - continues to grow.
