#MessageofRemembrance part of the centre piece of Remembrance Lane is the cast bronze list of all the members of The Engineering Institute of Canada who served in the Great War. Second World War monuments can be seen in the background.
Textual research usually isn’t that interesting to watch, but here is a peek at some of what I have been looking at for a new project
The RCE and CME Books of Remembrance on Remembrance Lane at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering. The Museum is at the corner of Remembrance Lane and Halifax Road corridors. Silhouettes of staff and students stand eternal vigil on the Rolls of Honour.
There are lots of small and wonderful things hidden in the collection that we don’t always get to show off, like these hand-made playing cards that were used by a Sapper in Korea. The poker hands on exhibit are those generated when we dealt a round of Seven Card Stud before putting them in the case. Unfortunately, the deck was not well shuffled.
Here is a peek at the Secret Workstation that we created behind some exhibit cases. It connects to the office through the lending library. It is not well known that the Museum and the CFSME Reference Library are in the same area - the Training Resource Centre upstairs at The Mitchell Building (J10). Both work to provide CME Branch culture and heritage resources to the CME Family at CFSME, at the greater Garrison Gagetown area, and to all CME units across Canada.
With no visitors in the gallery, we are fixing the wobbles and dips in the walls of the Great War gallery and fixing up the sound station where you can hear the letter from Fred that he sent to Bill after both were injured in an artillery attack in September 1918. Young Sappers read the letter in either English or French. The voice actors did a great job! They got back to the museum after spending several long days in the field just in time to go into the studio. The fatigue in their voices Is real!
